Revive by Tracey Martin

High-octane and adrenaline-filled, Revive by Tracey Martin is a must read.  A story of genetic manipulation, missing memories, and the awkward stages of young love, Revive is sure to captivate.

TMartin-ReviveWhat the mind forgets, the heart remembers.

Alone in a train station bathroom, Sophia Hernandez has no memory of who she is or how she got there. All she’s certain of are three things: her college ID is a lie, bad people are coming for her, and no one can be trusted.

The only clue to her past is the fellow student who finds her. Although Sophia’s gut tells her Kyle is lying when he claims he can’t help her, his touch makes her heart race. Is it because of a red-hot natural attraction, or a missing memory of something far more dangerous?

As two mysterious, menacing men chase them from the station, Sophia’s memories return in frustrating fragments. So do deadly skills she didn’t know she had. In the next forty-eight hours, a loved one’s life will be on the line as she sifts through a mounting tangle of secrets and lies.

Including the most heart-wrenching secret of all. Not only isn’t she a normal college student, she isn’t even a normal human.

Warning: Contains one girl who is more than she seems, one boy who knows more than he’s telling, and enough twists to give you whiplash. Expect explosions of all kinds.

My heart broke for Sophia many times over. This poor girl can’t catch a break. In between running from the bad guys and marveling over her impressive fighting and strategizing skills, Sophia’s memories begin to resurface. Unfortunately, Sophia isn’t liking everything that she uncovers. Even when she’s “rescued” and taken back home, Sophia keeps her cards close to her chest and doesn’t divulge all of the memories that come flooding back. I think she needs a good, long hug. As Sophia discovers more about her (ahem) different childhood, she is forced to come to grips with the fact that she might not like what her memories reveal about her.

Revive is written in first person told from Sophia’s perspective. I think the memory loss is more impactful reading about it first hand. I could feel Sophia’s frustration and disappointment each step of the way. Starting on the run, there are flashbacks to both Sophia’s time in college as well as her decidedly odd childhood and former “schooling.” Even while the story jumps back and forth in time, the plot continues to build momentum as Sophia’s memories are more fully recovered. I didn’t want to stop reading and each page made me more fully invested in Sophia and her friends. I don’t think I expected the pacing to be quite as fast and full of action, but I truly enjoyed it. The last sentence made me smile as it mirrored the introduction and set the stage for (hopefully) a really entertaining series.

Revive is an action-packed adventure with a little science fiction and some covert ops thrown in to round it out. Any expectations I could have had going in did not prepare me for the incredibly complex storyline and multi-faceted characters. I could have gone on a bit about my thoughts on Sophia’s old friends and teammates, but I think that would ruin the revelatory experience. I am curious as to whether the series will continue with Sophia in the driver’s seat or if another character will take over the narrative. As much as I loved Revive, I have so many questions yet to be answered that I can hardly wait for Resist!

A 30-something mother of a teenage (going on 30) daughter, I read between 4-8 books a week. Between work, chauffeur responsibilities, and reading, I don’t have much free time . However, I do like to knit and crochet in the winter (quality scarves and hats are highly underrated!). My favorite genres are urban fantasy, contemporary romance, and paranormal romance. I tend to binge read when I find a great new series, so I love to discover new-to-me series that already have several books out.
