Goodnight Goon by M. Rex

I came across this in the children’s section at Barnes & Noble today and I had to get it. Is this not great?

Goodnight monsters everywhere, in this parody romp with its own special twist!

“Goodnight tomb. Goodnight goon. Goodnight Martians taking over the moon.”

It’s bedtime in the cold gray tomb with a black lagoon, and two slimy claws, and a couple of jaws, and a skull and a shoe and a pot full of goo. But as a little werewolf settles down, in comes the Goon determined at all costs to run amok and not let any monster have his rest.

A beloved classic gets a kind-hearted send up in this utterly monsterized parody; energetic art and a hilarious text will have kids begging to read this again and again.

Seriously, Goodnight Moon was okay in my opinion, but this was just great.  Goodnight Goon is a great parody on a classic story that, in my opinion, makes the original even better.  The illustrations are fabulous and so vibrant in color that it simple captures your eyes to everything on the page.  The thing I love the most about this over the original is that there is so much to explore on each page.  There are so many things to find and describe that it’s like an I Spy for monsters.  Honestly, if I knew who the artist was, I would so totally be trying to find prints from this book to hang in Ian’s room.  That’s another part that was spectacularly done.  We’re talking horror creatures galore, but nothing is drawn in a way to incite fear in a child, but more of a fun intrigue for things that go bump.  It’s like going to the Addam’s Family home in color.  Seriously, the artwork alone is a great reason to pick Goodnight Goon up.

As for the story, it has the same rhyming as the original story, but it adds the great twists that all horror stories depend on – witches, vampires, goons, Martians and everything else you would expect in a young werewolf’s bedroom.  The flow is still there and yet it adds more than the original to totally make it stand on its own.  This is definitely a children’s novel, so there isn’t a lot of text, but what there is, it’s fun to read.

Overall, finding Goodnight Goon at Barnes & Noble was an awesome find.  This is one I had no problem buying in hardcover and adding to our library.  I cannot wait to get Ian to bed tonight so we can read it (even though he should already be in bed).  It’s not only the perfect book for this time of the year, but it’s a great novel to add to any fantasy/horror enthusiast’s library.
