The Veil by Chloe Neill

And it’s official (although I’ve pretty much known for a while…but hey, denial was a good state LOL), Chloe Neill is SOOO on my “auto-buy, I don’t care what book it is” list.  When I saw she was coming out with a new series, Devil’s Isle, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the first book, The Veil. And once again, Neill did NOT disappoint.

CNeill_TheVeilSeven years ago, the Veil that separates humanity from what lies beyond was torn apart, and New Orleans was engulfed in a supernatural war. Now, those with paranormal powers have been confined in a walled community that humans call the District. Those who live there call it Devil’s Isle.

Claire Connolly is a good girl with a dangerous secret: she’s a Sensitive, a human endowed with magic that seeped through the Veil. Claire knows that revealing her skills would mean being confined to Devil’s Isle. Unfortunately, hiding her power has left her untrained and unfocused.

Liam Quinn knows from experience that magic makes monsters of the weak, and he has no time for a Sensitive with no control of her own strength. But when he sees Claire using her powers to save a human under attack—in full view of the French Quarter—Liam decides to bring her to Devil’s Isle and the teacher she needs, even though getting her out of his way isn’t the same as keeping her out of his head.

But when the Veil threatens to shatter completely, Claire and Liam must work together to stop it, or else New Orleans will burn…

Excuse me while I take a deep breath, so I don’t completely fan girl on you and leave this review only saying GO BUY NOW, I PROMISE YOU, YOU WILL THANK ME! Sooo…that said, let me tell you why LOL.

I love Neill’s writing. It is so eloquent…in that way that few authors actually master. She doesn’t use a lot of prose but still weaves in all kinds of great world building (which is super necessary in a new UF series), with lots of action and still gives that vibe of sexual tension between the protagonists.  If you’re a Merit & Ethan fan, do not be surprised to feel a bit of that same tension and build up with Claire and Liam.

If you follow any of my reviews, you’ll often find that if the action in a story wanes, so does my interest.  So, one of the things I love about Neill’s writing, and this stays true in The Veil, is even when there is no “true” action scene, you can’t skip because you’ll miss vital information…but she doesn’t make this part slow and boring. You don’t want to skip it because you get that glimpse into what makes characters tick or some other piece of information that you *know* will be important down the road.

OK, I can’t *NOT* fangirl….so yeah. The Veil  was truly a fantastic read and most certainly one of my top reads for 2015 thus far. If you’re a fan of Chicagoland Vampires, you will fall in love with The Veiland Claire and Liam. True to my fangirl-ness, I squee’d and flailed as I live tweeted and tagged Chloe while I was reading…and SHE TWEETED back.  The sentiment that I tweeted? Oh, I was upset I had to put down The Veil in order to *gasp* sleep because I had a long day of work ahead of me the following day.  So fair warning…make sure you have time to read The Veil in one sitting without losing sleep. Don’t say I didn’t warn you if you lose sleep.
