Guest Author: Set That Genie Free by Candace Havens

I am excited to welcome author Candace Havens, who is celebrating the release of her new novel, Baby’s Got Bite, the second novel in her Take It Like A Vamp series.

CHavens_BabysGotBiteBennett Langdon has a firm no-relationships policy. Still, it doesn’t stop her from hooking up with a super-sexy bad boy at her best friend’s wedding. After all, it’s only one night—what harm could it do? Ten weeks later, a pregnant Bennett has her answer…

Linc Monahan can’t believe it. This wasn’t supposed to happen. He’s a werewolf, and shouldn’t be able to father a child with a human. Now Linc has to find some way to tell Bennett that not only do werewolves exist, but she’s about to have a baby with one.

But when word of their surprise conception gets out, the fur hits the fan. There are people who don’t want this baby to be born—even if it means killing. Now Bennett and Linc aren’t just fighting each other…they’re fighting for their lives.

Set That Genie Free

I’m afraid of genies. There. I said it out loud. They’re tricky beings and I just don’t trust them. Maybe it’s all that time spent cooped up in a bottle. I mean, that has to do something to the psyche. Or maybe it’s those terrible pants they’re forced to wear. Balloon/harem pants? Really? They aren’t attractive on anyone. Or maybe it’s that they’ve been portrayed as evil/confusing/mean-spirited beings and Hollywood has it all wrong.

Probably Hollywood has it all wrong…but I’m still afraid. I mean, if you’re a decent human being you should wish for world peace, to end poverty and hunger, and maybe fix the ozone or something. But I would worry that genie would fix world peace by killing all the humans–same for hunger and poverty. If you’re dead, you’re probably not hungry and you’re aren’t causing wars. Unless you’re on the “Walking Dead.” And what if their way of fixing the ozone would be to restore us back to the time of dinos. I don’t run very fast, I’d be dead meat. Literally.

Maybe you should wish for someone’s health? But then how to do you pick which person? That would just lead to a lifetime of guilt. And what if the one person you picked to save turns out to be jerk? I have sick folks in my family, but they wouldn’t let me use the wishes on them. (They are made of awesome.) But then the pressure is who get’s the wish? I can’t handle it.

So I think with wishes from genies, it doesn’t pay to be altruistic. Ever.

Hmmm. But wishing for things can also be tricky. I just walked through the shoe department at Nordstrom and they’re having a huge sale. But you’d have to try the shoes on first, and then be really specific about size and width–I’m forgetful. I wouldn’t say it right and I’d get a size fourteen Christian Louboutin pump that I could probably only use as a planter.

Money might be a good thing to wish for, maybe. You could help a lot of people. And being able to pay off school loans and IRS, well that’s just darn tempting. I really want a pool, and my house is showing it’s age. It could use a makeover. But the money has to come from somewhere. What if the genie takes it from a drug dealer, and then that drug dealer comes after you? Blood spatter on your freshly-painted walls, or being face down in your new pool, just doesn’t sound like fun.

So I say, let’s just free the genies. Maybe send them to a good genie home and let them live out their lives thinking about that one time a dude wished for rain, and there was forty days and forty nights of it. Yes, I know it’s a bible story. And yes, I know that’s not how it goes, but I’m still betting there was a genie involved. That sucker was watching Noah pack all those stinky animals onto one boat and laughing his rocks off, because some idiot “wished” for rain.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
