At the Beach with Kathy Lyons / Jade Lee

Jade LeeAs one of the #CMCon16 featured bloggers, I get to have a little fun with a few of the fabulous authors who will be hitting the beach for Coastal Magic 2016 by showcasing their many stories. Last year I interviewed four of the the CMC15 authors, but this year I’m changing it up. I came up with this really fun idea to have the authors introduce us to their worlds by sending their characters to the beach.

Quite a few of the authors took me up on it and today Jade Lee / Kathy Lyons is taking us to the beach with Trevor and Mellie, from 50 Ways to Ruin a Rake, and Mike and Tori, from The Player Next Door.

Isn’t Anyone Coming to the Beach with Me?

JLee-50 Ways to Ruin a RakeSo the assignment for this blog is to write a short piece about taking one of my characters to the beach. With that in mind, I ask my most recent characters to join me. First, I address Trevor and Mellie from 50 Ways to Ruin a Rake.

Trevor isn’t interested. Hot sand is all well and good, but it’s too easy to get too hot, too sandy, and bitten by insects. He does suggest I speak with Mellie’s entomologist father who would happily compare sand fleas to sheep ticks, if I so chose. That is not my idea of fun, so I try to entice him with a description of a modern beach. (They’re from the Regency period). As Trevor has a rakish reputation, I thought the lure of all those bikini-clad women would having him grabbing his binoculars and coming along, just for the scientific study, you know. All that female biology on display.

Turns out that Mellie was the one most interested in bikinis. Not to wear, of course. That would be scandalous. But she was extremely interested in the words, “Spandex” and “Lycra.” She has a fascination with fabrics, you see. It is how her family made most of their money. Not with synthetics but there’s this bleaching process she developed…

Mellie goes on about bleaching for quite some time. Long enough for Trevor to think of biological ways to distract her which works very well. It didn’t always, he confides, but in this case, they wander off toward their bedroom.

KLyons-Player Next DoorMeanwhile, I decide to head off for my more contemporary characters. I find the famous NY Knick point guard, Mike Giamaria, finishing off the last of a peach pie made by his love Tori. As I walk in, Tori is busy explaining how she adapted the pie recipe from a long lost Egyptian cookbook done in hieroglyphs. Neither of us is fooled. She’s clearly making stuff up, but we’re not sure if the recipe’s the invention or the Egyptian cookbook. When I broach the subject of the beach, Mike is interested, except for the media frenzy that would likely spoil the day. Tori says she’d love to go after she finishes looking up actual Egyptian cookbooks because wouldn’t that make a great sushi line?

“Egyptian sushi?” I ask.

Mike waves me off with a shrug before stretching out on the couch. He seems content to watch his wife putter from one project to another. Occasionally he offers her backyard labyrinth/rock garden suggestions before offering me some very special beer.

Well, obviously no one is going to the beach with me. In the end, I settle in for the beer and sushi. No raw snails, thank God, but the pie is quite lovely. And I realize pretty quickly that if I just flow with the randomness of Tori’s conversation, it eventually makes sense. And if it doesn’t, Mike is able to explain more or less. Some things, he says, are better left as a mystery. That’s okay. I want to discuss bear shifters because of a new story idea I had and Tori has just the eclectic mind to help me.

JLee-Prizzly bearWait a moment! So are Mellie and Trevor! They’re both scientists and would love Mike’s easy going personality. So I use my magic key fob and blip them both into Tori’s contemporary kitchen and the discussion begins. Did you know that there’s a new hybrid species of bear? Polar and Grizzly mix sometimes called a Prizzly, other times named a Groler. No joke. What if there’s a shifter clan… Well, the rest of that discussion will just have to wait until I write those books…

Meet Kathy Lyons / Jade Lee!

A USA Today Bestseller, JADE LEE has been scripting love stories since she first picked up a set of paper dolls. Ball gowns and rakish lords caught her attention early (thank you Georgette Heyer), and her fascination with the Regency began. And as a Taurus, she lives to pit a headstrong woman against a tortured hero just to watch them butt heads on the way to true love. Flesh wounds are rare, but the healing and laughter are real.

And don’t forget Jade’s other name, KATHY LYONS. That’s Jade’s lighter, contemporary side. She writes for Harlequin Blaze merging hawt sex and funny relationships into really great reads.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
