At the #CMCon16 Beach: Rebecca Zanetti

Rebecca ZanettiAs one of the #CMCon16 featured bloggers, I get to have a little fun with a few of the fabulous authors who will be hitting the beach for Coastal Magic 2016 by showcasing their many stories. Last year I interviewed four of the the CMC15 authors, but this year I’m changing it up. I came up with this really fun idea to have the authors introduce us to their worlds by sending their characters to the beach.

Quite a few of the authors took me up on it and today Rebecca Zanetti is taking us to the beach with Daire Dunne and his Brothers, the wickedly handsome witches from her third Realm Enforcers novel, Wicked Edge, which was released TODAY!

At the Beach with Daire Dunne

As a witch enforcer, a soldier for his people, the last thing Daire Dunne had time for was a trip to the beach.  Yet here he was, in black swim trunks, his feet burning from the sand.  “The bet was rigged,” he muttered into his elbow, pretending to cough.

His brother, Adam Dunne, snorted through the hidden ear communicator.  “Of course it was rigged.  Do you really think I’d be out there in the middle of bikini land looking for a drug dealer?”

Of course not.  His brother, a true strategic genius, was sitting in an air conditioned bayside hotel room right off the beach.  So when they’d drawn straws to see who had to venture into the hot and humid day, Daire should’ve been more suspicious when he lost.  “I’m going to kill you,” Daire said, straightening up.

“Uh huh.  Before murder, why don’t you catch the exchange first?  Okay?”  Adam asked.

“Fine.”  Daire stretched his torso and looked around.  A family of four played to the left, while several college-aged girls suntanned themselves to the right.  The closest one, a redhead, kept giving him hello looks.  If she had any clue he was over a three hundred years old, she’d go running.

She licked her lips.

Maybe not.

He glanced closer to the ocean to see his brother, Kellach Dunne, lounging on a cushioned chair.  “Anything, Kell?” he asked.

Kellach leaned up and pretended to rub suntan lotion on his long legs.  His ripped chest was a nice bronze with no chance of burning.  “Striped blue umbrella, twenty yards to your right.  I recognize a witch from Ireland—he’s the guy in the striped red trunks.  Name is Alan McCracken.  Low-life dealer of antiquities.”

The girls sighed to Daire’s right, all watching Kellach.

Daire grinned.  “You have admirers.”

“Donna tell Alexandra,” Kell murmured, talking about his mate, who often carried a gun.  “It has been a while since she shot one of us.”

“It’s Adam’s turn to get shot,” Daire said, kicking sand out of his way and glancing at the umbrella.  “The exchange is going down now.  Move in.”

He sauntered by the girls and said hello.  Several twittered and sat up, sweet smiles on their way too young faces.  One tried to stop him by pressing her arms against her boobs and squishing them together, but he kept going, trying to act casual.

Alan was passing off a wooden box to an obese man, a human by the looks of him, sitting in a beach chair.  His bulk strained the strips of plastic on the chair until his butt actually seemed to reach the sand.

Both men looked up.

Alan paled and dropped the box, turning to run.  He was incredibly tall, thin, and pale skinned, so it wasn’t as if he could get out of sight.

Daire sighed.  Why the heck did they always run?  He launched into motion just as Kell and Adam came from other directions.  Daire reached the criminal first, tackling him head first into the sand.  Particles flew, and he coughed out dust while jerking Alan up.  “You’re under arrest.”

Kellach ran back and retrieved the wooden box without much of a struggle.  He approached and flipped open the lid.

They all paused.

“Christmas ornaments?”  Daire asked, his mind spinning.

Alan shrugged. “ Yeah.  My mema makes them.  Charlie over there is a dealer of Christmas decorations.”

Daire looked at the shorter witch.  “Do you think I’m that stupid?”

Alan—unwisely—shrugged.

Daire grasped an ornament and squeezed, shattering the glass.

“Hey—” Alan started and then stopped when liquid poured from the ball.  “Geez.  What’s that?”

Kellach snorted.  “It’s Planekite, dumbass.”   Planekite was a mineral that harmed witches and humans, and the enforcers were working furiously to get it off the streets.

Daire smiled.  “Now you’re going to take us to the rest of your stash.  Let’s go.”  Maybe the beach wasn’t such a bad place to hang out, anyway.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
