Escapist Newsletter (Vol 3 Issue 10)

Check out the cover for the final Riley Jenson novel – Moon Sworn.  The release date isn’t until 2010, but SciFiGuy did clear something up for me recently.  When I first saw Moon Sworn listed at Keri’s website, I thought we were getting another Riley novel, but in reality the  ninth book was changed from Captured by Vengeance to Moon Sworn.  Man.  Here I was hoping we were getting more Riley.

Suvudu has posted the October additions to their free library and this month they have The Demon Awakens by R.A. Salvatore and First to Fight (Starfist #1) by David Sherman and Dan Cragg.  I haven’t heard of the second one, but I simple adore Salvatore and his Drizzt series.  I haven’t read The Demon Awakens yet, but now I’m going to!

Great news for Maggie Stiefvater. io9 and Variety are reporting that rights have been sold to translate Shiver to the silver screen. The movie adaptation will be produced by Unique Features partners Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne. However, other than this news, there really isn’t much else out. Has anyone else noticed that a lot of UF novels are hitting the screens. The next couple of years are going to have some great movies showing up.

Kmont over at Lurv a la Mode has already started thinking of 2010 reading challenges and has decided to host one herself.  Here is a brief description for Year of the Historical:

This will encompass both straight historical fiction and historical romance. I’m hoping this challenge will allow some of us to get back into reading historicals, like me, as well as help us get into some of those books in our TBR piles or maybe to just discover something new.

I’m tempted to join in, but I’m not one who does a lot of historicals unless they are paranormal or romance; but I do have to agree with her.  I grew up reading historical romance novels and I’ve gotten out of them in the last few years.  I didn’t see a required number of books read, so maybe I’ll join with the intent of reading 12, one a month.  Has anyone else started thinking of next year’s challenges?

Ava Gray, aka Ann Aguirre, has unveiled the cover for her second Skin novel (is there an official series name?), Skin Tight.  There is even a blurb as well as an excerpt up at Ava’s site, so head over and check out the glory.  The first novel, Skin Game, comes out November 3rd.

Speaking of Ann, she has also unveiled the cover for Hell Fire, the second Corinne Soloman novel over at the Borders SciFi BlogHell Fire is due out April 6, 2010.

Amazon is offering a free Kindle version of Lauren Dane’s Giving Chase.  This is the first in her Chase series and Lauren wants to make sure we’re aware that this is not an erotica romance.

If you’re looking to get yourself a signed copy of Kresley Cole and Gena Showalter’s Deep Kiss of Winter, it’s actually really easy to do. All you have to do is go here and purchase a copy.  The two will sign the books while they are on tour and you’ll get it soon afterwards.

Nicole Peeler has unveiled (I like that word right now) her new website and it looks snazzy.  I love the colors on her novel, The Tempest Rising, and they’ve used those same colors for the website.  It looks really awesome. Also, while I was there, I noticed that her third novel in the Jane True series will be called Tempest’s Legacy, but it just says coming soon.  We know that the second novel is called Tracking the Tempest, right?

Exciting news for those of us in Detroit.  Colleen Gleason has a couple of appearances scheduled! You’ll be able to see her in Hartland at the Cromain Public Library on October 27th and at the Brighton Borders on December 19th.  Now I need to figure out which one is closer to me so I can totally go.  And for those of you near Petrolia, Ontario, she’ll be at the Petrolia Public Library on October 15th.

The tenth Guardian novel by Meljean Brook has a title.  It’s probably been out there already, but if you’re like me and have been oblivious, it’s going to be called Demon Blood and will be out July 2010.  Meljean will also have her story Here There be Monsters, which is a part of her upcoming Iron Seas series, published in an anthology that is currently untitled.  The collection will be out August 2010 and will also include Angela Knight, Nalini Singh, and Virginia Kantra.

I’m adding something new to the newsletter this month, one I hope to remember to add each month. I’m going to feature one novel, unpublished or published, one I haven’t seen in the blogosphere much and want to get out there and here’s the first one. I fell in love with Marie Brennan’s Doppleganger series and I can’t wait until I get to start her Onxy Court series. The first book, Midnight Never Come is already out, but I somehow missed the release of the second novel, In Ashes Lie when it came out in June.

The year is 1666. The King and Parliament vie for power, fighting one another with politics and armies alike. Below, the faerie court has enemies of its own. The old ways are breaking down, and no one knows what will rise in their place.

But now, a greater threat has come, one that could destroy everything. In the house of a sleeping baker, a spark leaps free of the oven — and ignites a blaze that will burn London to the ground. While the humans struggle to halt the conflagration that is devouring the city street by street, the fae pit themselves against a less tangible foe: the spirit of the fire itself, powerful enough to annihilate everything in its path.

Mortal and fae will have to lay aside the differences that divide them, and fight together for the survival of London itself . . .

Doesn’t this series sound great?  The series actually starts out in the 16th century and the second novel takes place in the 17th century.  You know what, I think I will be joining Kmont’s Year of the Historical after all.  There are a lot of great paranormal historicals out there and this will give me a reason to focus on them at least once a month.

Marjorie Liu has announced the title to the tenth Dirk & Steele novel.  The Stars Below will be out sometime in June 2010.  She has also announced the title to the third Hunters’ Kiss novel, which happens to be A Wild Light.

LK Hamilton has confirmed via her blog that the next Anita Blake story will be titled Flirt.  This will be another novella length book and I’ve heard we’ll be getting another Anita next year, but I haven’t heard anything that confirms that rumor yet.

If you’re a True Blood addict, than you can really become one with the new beverage Tru Blood, which is being sold by HBOThe Horror Yearbook has some great drink recommendations that you can try with it.

Has everyone heard of Fifty-Two Stories?  The minds behind Harper Perennial are posting one new short story a week.  Some of the stories are new, and some may be classics, but they are all from authors we either know and love or really need to be reading. This is a great idea and I am loving it.  The current story is On the Weekends Sometimes by Ben Greenman.

I’ve added something new to my two list pages.  There have been a lot of authors who have found my Author Website Listing and I keep getting requests to be added. First off, I love that!  The fact that people want on the list is great.  Second, while I don’t mind getting emails, I thought I needed something a little easier.  So there is now a form on the page for anyone who wants to get their sites listed.  Since I found how to do forms, I also decided to add a form to the New Releases page in case there are any I’ve forgotten.  I’ve had people use it, so that’s awesome.

Jeri Smith-Ready has announced that the third WVMP Radio novel, Bring on the Night, will be released August 1, 2010.  Also, she’s given us the tentative titles to the fourth novel.  Lust for Life will be released about six months after Bring on the Night, so sometime early 2011.  She also revealed that Wicked Game and Bad to the Bone are now available for the Kindle.

SciFiGuy had the news that Vicki Lewis Thompson has a new magical series out called Babes with Brooms and will start with the February 2, 2010 release of Blonde with a Wand.  The second novel, Chick with a Charm, will follow on March 2nd.  Head over to for the SciFiGuy blurb.

I hadn’t seen it yet, so I thought I would post it. Lara Adrian has a cover for the seventh Midnight Breed novel, Shades of Midnight, which is due out December 29, 2009.

The Horror Yearbook has the official trailer for the upcoming Twilight: New Moon movie. It looks good. I will say I am a little nervous since I heard they were focusing more on Edward than Jacob for it, but the trailer makes it look amazing. What do you guys think?

The 2009 Golden Leaf Contest for Published Authors has announced their finalists.  Maria Snyder made the list for best paranormal with Storm Glass.  Also in the paranormal category are In Over Her Head by Judi Fennell and Immortals: The Crossing by Joy Nash.  Congrats ladies!

Calling all authors!  Ms. Patti Smith of the Detroit Public Schools is looking for YA novels that she can translate into Braille for her vision impaired students.  Would you be willing to donate a copy of your novel?  More information can be found on Cory Doctorow’s Craphound.com.

Jackie Kessler has launched a new website and blog for her new identity as a young adult author, Jackie Morse Kessler.  For those unfamiliar with Jackie’s new series, she’ll be writing about an anorexic teenage girl who is about to become the new Famine of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse.  The first novel, Hunger, will be out Fall 2010.

SciFiGuy found the cover for Lori Devoti’s Amazon Queen via Juno Books blog. Amazon Queen is the followup to Amazon Ink and will be released April 27, 2010.  SciFiGuy has the blurb if you’re interested.

MTV News is reporting that Aprilynn Pike’s Wings will be made into a feature film and will star Miley Cyrus in the lead role.  The film is being produced by Temple Hill Productoins, the same people behind Twilight. The film will be distributed by Disney, so take that as you like.

Jeaniene Frost has announced the title for the second Night Huntress World novel, which will feature Mencheres.  The title is Eternal Kiss of Darkness.  I have to say I like.

There’s a new book club in town and we can all thank Michelle Hauf for it.  VampireChix is starting up The Bite Club.  If you’re looking for a strictly vampire book group, this is the stop to be.  The first book being bitten into is The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2 and will be discussed on October 30th.

Check out what’s available for preorder on Amazon – Lover Mine by JR Ward. That’s right, Amazon is reporting that the next Black Dagger Brotherhood novel – John Matthrew’s story – will be out May 6, 2010. There’s even a blurb, check it out:

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other – vampire warriors, defenders of their race…John Matthew has been through his vampire transition and taken to the life of the Brotherhood with a vengeance, but he still can’t shake the nightmare of his past and is unsure of his future as a warrior hero. He’s made a promise to honour the Brotherhood and their fight with the slayers at all costs, until the love of his life is kidnapped and he is forced to make a choice that could change his life and the Brotherhood’s forever…

There has been an excerpt posted for JR Ward’s next BDB novel, Lover’s Mine.  Sorta.  There was one posted on her Warden forum, but for those who are not members, you can also find it at GoodReads.  it’s message #163 and it’s not terrible long, but it’s different that what showed up in the back of Covet.

Ilona Andrews has posted the second chapter to Magic Bleeds, the fourth Kate Daniels novel.  You can read the first chapter at the end of her latest release – On the Edge.

VampChix has found an interesting new segment – I Kissed A Vampire.  This will be an online musical that can be seen via iTunes on October 13th.  VampChix has more details (like the summary), so head over and check it out if you’re intrigued like me.

Suvudu has posted a new short story by Jackie Kessler and Caitlin Kittredge called Canary Code.  It’s not all that long, but it’s still a good read.  Suvudu has posted another original short story and this time it’s by Kelley Armstrong.  Recruit is set just before the events of Frostbitten (which releases today) and gives the background on the investigation that takes Elena and Clay to Alaska.  You can read Recruit via the internet here or download a pdf copy here.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
