#BlackFriday: April and Nolan by J.K. Coi

Black Friday is here and we’re discussing the season with J.K. Coi’s April and Nolan from Protecting His Assets.

When a sexy CEO needs protection…only the best will do.

CEO Steve Nolan is wealthy, successful, and in danger. Now, thanks to his business partner, he has a bodyguard—a rigid, controlled woman with a smoky voice that invites steamy thoughts of rumpled sheets and oh-so-satisfying sleepless nights. So if Steve has to play the game, he’s going to make damn sure he’s in charge of the rules…just as long as no one finds out.

April Porter has met incredibly handsome, high-powered men before. Guys just as smooth, who didn’t take her seriously, and who broke her heart. So she’s just here to do her job and stay focused and professional.

Even if Steve Nolan isn’t just another rich jerk. Even if the sexual spark between them keeps getting hotter. And even if protecting his business and his ass(ets) means April could lose her heart in the bargain…

April and Nolan

JKCoi-Protecting His Assets“You don’t seriously want to go shopping…today. Tell me you don’t.” April couldn’t keep the twinge from her voice. There was nothing more frightening to a bodyguard than a client determined to go out in public on Black Friday. Just the thought of the pushing and shoving and screaming made her eyelid twitch and her blood pressure rise.

“I don’t ever want to go shopping,” Nolan said, grabbing his jacket from the back of the chair and pulling it on. “But I was supposed to pick something up, and got called into those meetings before the holiday and haven’t had another chance until today.”

“In God’s name, what could it possibly be that can’t wait until next week when the madness dies down to a dull roar?”

He shrugged as if nothing in the world really mattered. Jesus, she wanted to punch him when he did that. It was part of his bored playboy act, but it didn’t fool her, not anymore. He wouldn’t in a million years have suggested going to a mall on a day like today unless it was for something more important than his own sanity.

She crossed her arms. “Did you forget your mother’s birthday?”

He grinned. “You’re cute when you’re annoyed with me.”

“I do not want to go shopping.”

“Good, because I don’t want you to come with me,” he said.

“Oh.” She frowned. “You…you don’t?” And why not?

He laughed and tugged his shirtsleeves down to his wrists before stepping in front of her and leaning in to steal a kiss that left her warm and flustered, with weak knees and the urge to let out the tight bun in her hair and undo the top button of her prim blouse.

“Why don’t you go home and see your dad for a few hours?” he suggested. “I’ll pick you up later and we’ll have our date, just like I promised.”

She grunted. “That’s what everyone says before the apocalypse. But if you go out there you’ll be zombie food and I’m never going to see you again.”

She was only half joking. It hadn’t been long since he’d needed a bodyguard for real and that had been scary enough. Even though her mind knew he wasn’t in danger anymore, her heart was still finding it hard to put those memories behind them.

She had an idea. With a sultry smile, she reached up and pulled the pins out of her hair, shaking it out like she’d seen in the movies. Then she did undo the top button of her blouse…and the next button for good measure, too, letting him have a glimpse of the sexy new lace bra she’d bought in anticipation of their date tonight.

At first it felt silly and vulnerable, but as his gaze sharpened with interest she started to feel powerful and closed the distance between them.

“Are you sure you have to leave?” she asked, gazing up at him expectantly.

He squeezed his eyes tightly closed. “It’s, ah…pretty important,” he said, a distinct tremor in his voice.

She pressed herself against him, immediately enveloped by the heat his big, hard body pumped out. “More important than this?”

“You’re not making it easy,” he groaned. “I wanted to get you a gift.”

Now that was a surprise. She leaned back. “What the hell do I need a gift for?”

“Somehow, I knew you would say that.” He shook his head. “Today is our one month anniversary. I have it on good authority that this is a gift-giving occasion.”

She laughed. “Only for you, because you’ve never been with a woman for such a long time before.”

His eyes gleamed as he cupped her chin. “None of them were you,” he murmured in a low voice that did rumbly things to her insides before he kissed her.

Melt. “I can think of a much better gift than anything you’re going to find at a store.”

His lips moved to the delicate spot on her neck and she felt him smile. “Oh?”

She smiled, too. “The kind of gift we can both receive right through ‘til morning.”

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
