Wild Blue Under by J. Fennell

The second novel in Judi Fennell’s Merpeople series, Wild Blue Under is a little different than the first novel, In Over Her Head, but just as captivating.

Rod Tritone, heir to the throne of the undersea world, needs a queen capable of ruling the oldest kingdom on earth. Someone regal, learned and of noble birth. Problem is, the only eligible noble-born Mer princess is half-Human – and she doesn’t have a clue about the non-Human part.

Valerie Dumere has screwed up her life at every turn, so when her mother dies and leaves her the family business, Val realizes it’s up to her to buckle down and get her life on track. No more excuses. So when a guy shows up claiming to be her destiny, she scoffs. No way. She isn’t running away from her responsibilities ever again – no matter how good the guy looks without a shirt.

But Rod isn’t going away. He can’t claim his inheritance without her – and Val will lose hers if she goes with him. It’s going to take one whale of a tale to get her to chuck it all and follow him off into the wild blue under…

In Over Her Head took us on a wild ride under the ocean waves while Reel and Erica raced for their lives.  Wild Blue Under puts us in the middle of the United States, heading to the ocean, with Rod bound and determine to introduce Valerie to her heritage.  The only catch is that Val thinks she’s allergic to the ocean and is certain that Rod is nuts.  Plus, we have Livingston there to liven up the entire adventure.  Seriously, what would you do if a talking seagull suddenly appeared in your bedroom, issuing orders?  The imagery Fennell used in In Over Her Head is definitely there in Wild Blue Under as we drive through the countryside trying to escape from dive-bombing birds.  You heard me right.  Instead of a mad sea witch being the villain, we have an albatross to stay away from and he has a lot more inventive ways of delaying the two.

Between the story, the engaging characters and the floundering birds, there’s really nothing that doesn’t try and keep your attention in Wild Blue Under.  I’m kind of having a hard time writing this review because it’s such a great romance.  We have great chemistry brewing between Valerie and Rod, and even though they both believe it can’t go anywhere, it doesn’t stop them from falling for each other.  There’s enough action to keep the story interesting and yet it helps move the plot along.  The plot and the romance work beautifully together, giving our two heroes the chance to learn more about each other.  We are given some great comedic relief with Livingston and his fellow birds and it’s just fun and quirky.

Overall, Wild Blue Under is just an enjoyable read and is great for those winter days when you need a little sunshine to get through the day.  If you’re looking for something a little different in your romance, then this series is definitely one you should check out.
