Terry SpearAs one of the #CMCon17 featured bloggers, I get to have a little fun with a few of the fabulous authors who will be hitting the beach for Coastal Magic 2017 by showcasing their many stories. We had so much fun with last year’s At the Beach feature, that we’re doing it again.

Today Terry Spear is taking us to the beach with Jessie from her Heart of the Jaguar series. The fifth book, A Very Jaguar Christmas, comes out October 4th; so if Finding the Right #CMCon17 Beach Shot — Cougar Style gets your interest, make sure you check out the first book, Cougar’s Mate.

Once in a lifetime, we have that special Kodak moment, but what if it’s not what you think it is? What if you try to dismiss it, but it’s right there–in your face, taunting you to pay attention and take a moment to realize just what you have is real–more real than any shot you could take?

Finding the Right Beach Shot—Cougar Style

tspear-a-very-jaguar-christmasJessie Whittington was late! She had meant to reach the Colorado beach in time to photograph the sunset. Sure, she’d be here for three more days, staying at the cabins and she could photograph every night and day until she left. But what if tonight’s sky was the only one that was spectacular? What if tomorrow’s was blasé?

The water was aqua blue, a massive stormy cloud off to one side of the lake, the white of the clouds reflecting off the surface, the darker blue of the clouds disappearing into the water. And even that would make for a beautiful picture if she could just get her tripod set up and start shooting the spectacular scene before her: the mountains in the background, the wildflowers of yellows and purples covering the green grass on either side of the wooden walkway leading down to the sandy beach.

She saw in colors, the beauty of every inch of it as she lugged her tripod and camera equipment down the sandy-colored walkway, newly built or it would have been weathered and gray. The beach was golden, and she thought she should take a picture of the walkway and the lake from up above, to show the whole beautiful scene. Yet she was late and she wanted to capture the sunset most of all. But what if the scene from up above was even better? What if the view from her cabin could have given her the greatest shots of all?

She quickly moved through the grass, put her camera bag down, then proceeded to set up her tripod. By the time she had her camera set up, she was ready to begin taking shots and peered into her camera’s viewer, watching the sun as it began its descent. The clouds were taking on a pink tinge and reflecting off the—

What the heck? A large animal ran across the sand and she shifted her attention to the beach. It moved like a cat. A big cat. A cougar.

No way could it be a real cougar. Well, a shifter, yes, but not a genuine full-blooded cougar.

He was gone and her sun was setting. Ugh!

She quickly focused on the blossoming sunset and began taking shots of the golds and pinks and oranges reflecting off the clouds and the lake, the ripples in the water creating more interest, though a glassy lake could be even more beautiful. The hint of the full moon highlighted the back of the clouds.

Just as she was shooting away, the cat, and yes, it was a cougar, ran along the shore again! Right in front of her, so she wasn’t sure if she caught him in a blur, or she caught a good likeness of him. She hadn’t meant to capture anything but the beautiful lake scene and the setting sun.

The sun finally disappeared from the sky and sank behind the mountains, highlighting them for a few minutes before it disappeared completely. The sky was still a dark blue—dusk, not yet black. The stars were in full, sparkling form and she began to take pictures of them as the clouds drifted off as if opening a curtain for her and showing off their theatrical beauty.

“I hope you got my good side,” a man with a deep voice said as he walked up behind her.

She swallowed a shriek. He had to be the cougar, a shifter, his approach so quiet, she hadn’t heard him come up behind her at all. She turned to look into the most beautiful green eyes she’d ever seen—fluorescent, like a cat’s would be capturing a bit of light from the stars and the full moon.

“Staying at the cabins?”

For the first time ever, she forgot about photographing the stars, or the moon now reflecting off the lake, or anything else as she wanted to take pictures of him. She didn’t do people portraits, but if he would model for her—her gaze swept down his naked torso, took in the rippled muscles and tanned gorgeousness of him, to his blue swim trunks—she wouldn’t need to photograph anything else.

He smiled, and that beautiful dimpled smile sealed the deal.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
