Guest Author: Kevin James Breaux Introduces JOE and H.B.

I am excited to welcome author Kevin James Breaux, who is celebrating the release of his second Water Kingdom novel, Two Polluted Black-Heart Romances.

The ancient shaman Alexander has finally been defeated. His plot to control minds has been thwarted. The world breathes a sigh of relief.

However, there is no respite for Sabrina, Cade, and Moselle—a fairy, vampire, and mummy who are in deep trouble after exposing the shadowy Otherworldly Assembly. As they try to evade the dark organization’s assassins by hiding in the shadier corners of Los Angeles, they discover a deeper, more immediate threat to themselves and the world at large. Meanwhile, a human named Jackson struggles to remember his past and decode his complicated emotions after a near-death experience.

Two Polluted Black-Heart Romances builds on the tantalizing paranormal fantasy One Smoking Hot Fairy Tail, expanding the scope and raising the stakes. Filled with danger, humor, and a dash of romance, this story is a fantasy in every sense of the word.

Character Introductions – JOE and H.B.

In the my new novel, Two Polluted Black-Heart Romances, the sequel to One Smoking Hot Fairy Tail, (and book two in the Water Kingdom Series),  we meet a new character from a previously unmentioned Otherworldly race. He’s a sentient slime and he goes by the name Joe.

Joe plays an important part in Two Polluted Black-Heart Romances and possibly even more as the series unfolds. In book two, when we are first introduced to Joe, he is a spy for the Tainted: a group of mistreated and misbegotten otherworldlies. Joe is caught spying by Cade, the vampire boyfriend of the series’ main character Sabrina London. Cade should be slumbering with his clan and the rest of the vampire population, and plans to re-enter sleep soon, but his curiosity leads him down a path that he cannot escape from…and Joe is little help.

But who is Joe? What does he want? Why is he watching Cade and his friends? What does he want with Sabrina?

First off it is important to note that Joe, the slime, can mimic shapes and other living creatures that are relative to his size and mass. He doesn’t always have to look like a pile of dog vomit…instead he can look like a dog. He likes to look like the Taco Bell dog and often brags that it helps him with the ladies. Joe is full of information and likes to blab. In fact, it was his voice and the way he used his words, that reminded Cade of the actor Joe Pesci from the movie CASINO. Which is why Cade started calling him Joe.

When Cade crosses paths with Joe, Joe is shaped like a cat and merged with another slime. Joe warns him of an impending danger. A massive earthquake that threatens more than just Cade’s well being, but the wellness of all his friends and family. Joe goes even further. Joe has another ability, one Cade knows of from past experience. Joe can interface with the minds of other creatures and show them what he wants: fact or fiction. When Joe shows Cade the source of the earthquake, the vampire panics.

Is Joe good or bad? It’s hard to tell. He helps Cade and at times, possibly sets him up to fail. Is he still a spy or worse an assassin? Only time… and the rest of the Water Kingdom Series… will tell.

Joe is not the only new otherworldly we meet in Two Polluted Black-Heart Romances, we also meet Cade’s old neighbor. A large eagle-shaped gargoyle by the name of 677 Hollywood Blvd (H.B. for short). H.B. lives in a townhouse complex where Cade called home when he and his clan were still awake before the new millennium. Cade considered his home a safe house, and his neighbor, H.B. a friend. H.B., like all gargoyles in the Water Kingdom series, were once only stone statues perched outside old buildings. They earn their names from their addresses. Through an act of magic, from unknown sources, the statue is brought to life first to guard and protect the building and/or one of its inhabitants. This is H.B.’s past, but he has since retired. Living alone next door to Cade, H.B.’s biggest pleasure in life is movies, especially 1990’s action and adventure ones.

In Two Polluted Black-Heart Romances, Cade enlists his friend’s help in protecting Sabrina. H.B. is just happy to see some action and gladly goes along for the adventure. As a gargoyle, H.B. is made of solid heavy stone, but can easily fly. He has other tricks too. Although slow moving at times, H.B. is smart and has a great memory. He is also incredibly loyal to those who have helped him in the past.

I hope you find these characters as interesting to read about as they were to write. And remember my motto: Write Makes Might!

Thanks all!

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I love Kevin’s work! These are both amazing books with great sounds on traditional fantasy characters. The slimes for example, I’ve never read a book that portrayed them in such a detailed way. These are truly one of a kind books that elicit a myriad of feelings. Everyone should read these books!
