Today, I get to welcome RachaelfromNJ to Literary Escapism. Rachael blogs over at the wonderful site Enchanted by Books.
I Love Books.
A lot of bloggers tend to stick to one genre on their blogs, but I love ALL books. I review mysteries, paranormals, urban fantasy, YA, romance, and many other genres. I love it all.
When I first discovered paranormals, I collected them. I wanted every paranormal by every popular author. But I was intimidated to read one. I thought it was going to be like SciFi and I wouldn’t understand them. I had no idea they were romances and mysteries also!
My first paranormal was Demon’s Kiss by Eve Silver. I felt like I was taken into another world. I loved it and wanted more. Since then I’ve read every paranormal I could get my hands on. Some of the popular ones I haven’t tried yet, but I’m getting there! Some of my favorite paranormal authors are Cynthia Eden, Jackie Kessler, Linda Wisdom, Victoria Laurie, Julie Kenner and Sherrill Quinn.
I think the attraction to paranormals is that it’s not real life. There are vampires, ghosts, werewolves, fairies, and shape shifters to just name a few. When you read a paranormal this world comes alive and the possibilities are endless. Instead of the bad guy killing because of mommy issues, in paranormals the reason could be that 500 years ago he was made a vampire against his will and wants revenge because he doesn’t want to be immortal anymore. When we use our imagination and have a world like in paranormals, the reasoning for the crimes is endless. It’s not limited and this is part of the attraction to those books, at least for me.
Next I discovered urban fantasies. Urban fantasy is like paranormals but the background is gritty, there aren’t always happy endings, and the romance is minimal compared to paranormal romance. I love this genre and I try to read as many as possible. Jennifer Rardin, Phaedra Weldon, SJ Day and Devon Monk are some of my favorite urban fantasy authors.
I’ll read a contemporary romance or chick lit book also. I crave them. I don’t read enough of them. One of my favorite chick lit novels is 20 Times a Lady by Karyn Bosnak. I dare you to not love this book!
But when it all comes down to it, mysteries are my first love and will always be. I remember being a little kid curled up in the window seat at the library reading Nancy Drew books. As an adult I discovered Janet Evanovich, Harlan Coben, Greg Iles, Allison Brennan, Lisa Gardner, Lisa Black, Robert Crais and many other wonderful authors. I love thrillers, cozy mysteries, police procedurals, murder mysteries, serial killers, and just anything with suspense and excitement!
So mysteries started my love for books and I will read them still no matter what other genres I discover.
So what is your favorite genre? Who are your favorite authors?

My favorite genre and author? Yeah, I’m a trashy romance/PNR/UF kind of gal. Always have been, something tells me always will be. I just like a little romance in my stories. For all my recs, click here.

I’m a big paranormal girl. It can be romance, but it doesn’t have to be as long as there are paranormal aspects. Gosh, fave authors; Charlaine Harris, Rachel Caine, Richelle Mead to name a few.

Gothic romance was my first love when I really started getting into reading back in high school. Victoria Holt to be specific. Then I graduated to Horror, then High Fantasy. Eventually I discovered Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy, and right now they are my favorite genres. Can you see the theme in my reading? Yep, there has to be some sort of paranormal aspect. Even as a kid the Chronicles of Narnia were my favorite reads. I’ve dabbled in a few thrillers but not many. The paranormal always pulls me back.
Great topic Rachael!
Also, enjoyed Cynthia Edens post at your blog today.
