Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss

I had forgotten how much fun tongue twisters are until I picked up Ian’s copy of Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss.

For a book filled with tongue twisters, there are some really good ones in here.  I was doing a pretty good job with the first few pages; once I got into a rhythm, the words flowed pretty easily.  Then I got to the middle of the book. Wow.

Who sees who sew whose new socks, sir?
You see Sue sew Sue’s new socks, sir.

I don’t know what it is about the S’s, but they’ve always given me a problem.  Seuss’s play on words was simply spectacular and he had me tripping up on every other line.  Of course, I was going pretty fast, but once I slowed down, it wasn’t that bad.  It became a little easier towards the end of the book, but then I noticed that I was skipping words.  I was getting the words out right, but I may have missed a few.

When beetles fight these battles in a bottle with their paddles
and the bottle’s on a poodle and the poodle’s eating noodles…
…they call this a muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle
bottle paddle battle.

Overall, Dr. Seuss’ Fox in Socks is a fun read.  While Ian is still a little young to follow along with me, he enjoyed listening to me muddle through it.  I can’t wait until he does get old enough that the two of us can try and get through the twisters together.
