Moonstone by M. Brothers

You know how I said it’s usually hit or miss for me with young adult novels? Well, I haven’t quite made up my mind about Moonstone by Marilee Brothers yet.

The story revolves around a fifteen year old girl, Allie, who suddenly gains these telekinetic powers after a close encounter with lightning.  After getting these new skills and, after talking to the local “witch”, she’s given a pendant with a moonstone and is told to protect it for the sake of humanity.  That’s really about it.

The story has a lot of promise as a series, but I wasn’t really captivated by it.  Moonstone was definitely a novel I could walk away from and there were certain elements that just didn’t seem like they were needed.  While I was reading Moonstone, Rachel Caine’s Morgansville Vampire series came to mind frequently.  Not so much as a comparison between the stories, but in more of the way I felt when reading them.  The stories were good, I did want to continue reading to see want happened, but the plot was a little young for me. I think that’s the part that is not clicking with me.  As for the individual characters, they were definitely well developed.  You learn more about Allie’s life growing up and what she has to go through to get where she is.  She still wants to be her mother’s little girl, but she knows one of them has to be the adult.

Overall, Moonstone wasn’t a bad read.  If you’re a fan of the Caine series, then you’ll definitely enjoy this one as well.  However, I pride myself on being honest, and I really didn’t find it to be all that memorable.  Don’t get me wrong, if there is a sequel, I will try and read it.  I just won’t be rushing out to get my hands on a copy.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
