My First Board Books

I was browsing through Borders Books today and came across two books that I’m really liking.  They are My First Word Board Book and My First Colors Board Book. I know they are not paranormal, but they grabbed my toddlers attention so they are definitely worth mentioning in my opinion.

The first book, My First Word Board Book, is just filled with all sorts of words and shapes and objects that can be found at home.   They include pages dedicated to the body, the kitchen, colors, shapes, counting, toys, shopping, things that go, and many others.  There’s no story involved but it’s really easy to create a dialog with Ian using the pictures they have included.  Each page has at least a dozen words with the corresponding picture, so there’s a bunch of things to look at.  Plus, all the pages are white, so the pictures pop out and can quickly catch anyone’s attention.  There’s so much to look at and discuss, that it’s easy to spend a half hour going over everything.  And it’s not that big of a book!

My First Colors Board Book is pretty much the same thing, but it focuses only on colors.  Each color is shown by multiple objects that can be found in that color.  For instance, for the green page, it includes a parrot, a bottle, apples, peas, leaves, and a caterpillar – all of which are green.  There’s very little color other than the green, so it makes it easier on Ian to not get green confused with any other color.  Also, not only is Ian learning the colors, but he’s learning more words as well.  Each page has a least a half of a dozen objects, all with their words, and none of them are repetitive.  Another thing I like about this book is that it includes non-standard colors as well. Usually, a color books has the standard rainbow colors, but this one includes gold, silver, pink, brown, and even has a page for multicolored.

I’ve only picked up these two in the “My First Board Books” series, but I’m definitely going to go out and get more.  If all the others are like these ones, then they will make teaching Ian new words so much easier.  So I would definitely recommend these books to anyone with toddlers.
