Scent of Shadows by Vicki Pettersson

I have to admit, I attempted to read Scent of Shadows by Vicki Pettersson a couple of weeks ago, but I had to put it down when I heard the main characters referred to as “superheroes”. I will admit, I initially went into this novel expecting vampires or werewolves or something like that. After all, all the Urban Fantasy I’ve been reading so far has involved those, so when I got to a passage that said “we’re superheroes”, it threw me off of it.

After reading a couple other novels, and knowing that this novel didn’t involve the typical paranormal elements, I was able to get into more than I than the first time. Initially, the whole comic superhero idea was kind of hokey to me, but it actually works. Pettersson doesn’t give us characters that can fly or shoot lasers out of their eyes, but characters that we can associate it with. Her heroes have abilities that are enhanced instead of fantastical. Augmented speed and strength are common, however, some have extra ‘powers’ that are still acceptable to the modern reader. This same concept is applied to her plot as well. We’re not expected to read about the super villain’s attempt to create some scientific impossibility, but rather how the enemy is trying to manipulate human nature and create mass confusion.

Overall, the novel was good and it was kind of a nice change from reading about vampires and werewolves.
