The Tutu Ballet by S. Lee

I’m not sure what I think about The Tutu Ballet by Sally Lee. On the one hand, it’s a cute little book about a ballet class involving animals and I can see how a lot of kids will like that. It did actually keep Ian’s attention a lot longer than I though it would, however, the story is kind of weird. Usually, with most children books, there is some kind of underlying theme going on. Something along the lines of teamwork or picking up your toys or something. Yet, The Tutu Ballet had none of this. Basically, the four students all have their favorite kicks that they were able to do perfectly and instead of trying to say that if they practiced the other moves, they would be able to do those perfectly as well, the book focused more on creating a recital on these parts. I think that’s what is making me so iffy on this book. There’s no redeeming quality that a lot of children’s books have. Instead of using a theme of “try new things” or “practice makes perfect”, the students are indulged and that’s about it.

Overall, the illustrations are cute, but the story ran flat. It’s not one I can see me pulling out to read again unless Ian brought it to me.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
