Needing Some Inspiration

I’m in a rut right now.  If you’ve noticed, I’ve been sorely lacking on posting reviews lately and that is in now way any indication to what I’ve been reading.  I have been pouring through the books lately, but when I go to sit down and write the review, my mind goes blank.

So I’m asking for a little help.  Here’s the list of books that I’ve read recently and need to review.  What have you heard about them that you want to know?  What should I focus on?  Whatever you got.  My mind is very much in the read read read mode and not write write write mode, which is hindering any kind of eloquent review.

  1. Doubleblind by Ann Aguirre
  2. Bound to Shadows by Keri Arthur
  3. Blood Promise by Richelle Mead
  4. Fearless Fourteen by Janet Evanovich
  5. Wild Blue Under by Judi Fennell
  6. Hex in High Heels by Linda Wisdom
  7. Bitter Night by Diana Pharaoh Francis
  8. Darkness Unleashed by Alexandra Ivy
  9. One Lucky Cowboy by Carolyn Brown
  10. Three Days to Dead by Kelly Meding

I think that’s all of them.  I am so farther behind then I thought I was and I do not like this one bit.  Jesse has confiscated all of my books until I get these written and I’m hoping I can get through all of them tomorrow plus the newsletter.  Don’t worry though, they won’t all pop up at once.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Oh man. If I waited until 10 books later to write my reviews, I wouldn’t be able to do it or remember anything I wanted to say! I write each review as soon as I finish the book. The latest at 2-3 days later. Usually I write them right away while everything is still fresh in my mind. I would suggest just mentioning for the series books how it stands up against the other books, if you can read them out of order or not, and what you enjoyed about it. As for Evanovich’s book I would mention if anything has progressed in this new installment since I see people are constantly complaining about the lack of progression in it. Sometimes I find flipping through the book and rereading the ending helps me refresh my memories of the book. That may help you a little. Good luck!

  2. Could it be the new blog look that’s throwing you off? What I mean is, writers have habits they get into, and maybe you were used to the other look.

In an interview with the New Yorker, Nora Roberts said that the number one rule of writing is, “Put your ass in the chair.” : )

  3. I’m curious about Three Days to Dead by Meding. What is the overall story line? What is the main character like? These days I really hate reading tough heroines with really corny humor. I’m reading Julie Kenner’s Tainted right now and the character Clarence is driving me crazy. The way he speaks, his silly humor. I also wasn’t wild about Johnny in Vicious Circle. Something about very alpha males with corny one-liners makes me crazy – in a bad way.

I’m planning to buy Bitter Night this week but I’d like to know what you thought. I’ve never loved witch story lines, so I’m going with Bitter Night based on the fantastic reviews I’ve read. Is there a lot of action? IS there a lot of info on witches? Vicious Circle had great reviews but I didn’t like it. I thought it was boring and witch rituals never do anything for me.

  4. Rachael, I generally do the same thing, but the words just haven’t been coming to me. I can’t believe I’ve let it get this bad. I will be honest though, I do have some notes on a couple of these, but not a lot. Thankfully, I have a pretty good memory when it comes to books (the ones I read at least), so I just have to browse a few pages before the story comes back.

Michelle, I don’t think it’s the new look. Of those 10 novels, about 7 of them were before the new look appeared. Give or take. As for getting my ass in the chair, that’s half the problem. I have Internet access. :P I’m easily distracted and when I’m not focusing, I like to play. I need to get focused. That’s my biggest problem right now.

LJ – One of the things I do like about the Meding books is the heroine. She’s not that corny and it seems like the roles for the hero and heroine have been reversed. That is in my notes to talk about. As for Bitter Night, I think you’ll like it. It’s a witch story line, but the main character isn’t a witch. I can definitely attribute my lack of reviews to Bitter Night. I am so engaged in this novel and it is really hard to put down.

  5. how about that old chestnut: who what when where and how or
did you like it? y or n
what did like or dislike about the book? do you know why?
how did the book make you feel? can you relate the the characters?
    did you like the plot?
was it an easy or hard read? why?
would you recommend the book to someone else? why yes or no? why?

did you read them too fast for them to register? maybe you need to do a bit of rereading.

    good luck.
