Demon Tides at Darkness

Check out the gorgeous cover Meljean Brook has for her upcoming Guardians novel. Demon Blood is the sixth novel (depending on how you count the anthology stories) and will be out July 6, 2010.

Fifty-Two Stories has posted their latest story. This time we have The Weightlifters by Daniel Torday.

Ilona Andrews has thrown up a snippet from the currently untitled Edge 2 novel.  You know, I like excerpts, but I love Andrews snippets more.  They take less time to read and there’s more to read considering how often she posts them compared to only posting once.  And I lied. Once I read SciFiGuy’s Weekend Report, I found the title for the second novel.  Edge 2 is now known as Bayou Moon.

Genreality has the first chapter to Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty’s House of Horrors, which comes out.

Interviews:

Kelly Gay announced the title for her second Charlie Madigan novel. The Darkest Edge of Dawn will be out August 31, 2010.  For a chance to read her debut novel, The Better Edge of Darkness, keep reading.

SciFiGuy’s Weekend Report announced a new urban fantasy series, but I have no clue who the author is.  Doug doesn’t say!  Here is what he does say: (Edited to add, Doug came through, the author is Anthony Francis)

Bellebooks announced a new urban fantasy series called Skin Dancer.  The first book, Frost Moon, is set in Atlanta with werewolves, vamps, and a coveted tattoo artist who embues her designs with magical powers.

Sad news…Ann Aguirre is telling us that there are only two more novels planned for Sirantha Jax (after the upcoming Killbox).  The last two novels will be titled Aftermath and End Game and will end the series in 2012.

Angieville is sharing quite a few covers that spark the imagination. I know one of them has already caught my eye.

Tez Says has noticed the new “follow the twitter” trend that has been going on and she wants to bring the blog back.  Tez is volunteering to guest post for anyone who wants her and all you have to do is send her an email.  I have to say, I’m will her on the Twitter thing.  It’s nice and all that, but it’s a bit of a pain to go back and figure out what everyone has been saying.  I so prefer Facebook over Twitter (FYI…I am a FB junkie, so you can pretty much find me there any time of the day).

Dark Faerie Tales has the cover for Alex Prentiss’ Night Tides, which releases January 26, 2010.  I haven’t heard of this book yet, but I like the markings on the cover.  Dark Faerie Tales has the blurb if the cover grabs you too.

There is some sad news in the blogosphere.  Kimberly from Darque Reviews will be leaving the book blogging community!  This is such sad news and she is going to be missed.  Darque Reviews was one of the first sites I found once I discovered the book blogging community and she’s been one I could always count on for a great review.  It’s going to be weird to not see her around any more.

Meljean Brook had an interesting piece over at the Oddshots this past weekend.  She’s talking about the various cover artists out there and people are throwing out their favorite artists.

It’s amazing what you miss when you don’t read the Reader all weekend.  Dark Faerie Tales gave us the news that Ann Aguirre and Carrie Lofty are teaming up for a new paranormal apocalyptic series.  They’ll be writing under the pen name of Ellen Connor and the first three novels will be titled: Nightfall, Midnight and Daybreak.

It definitely bears repeating: The Story Siren has a terrific post with excellent advice for new bloggers about requesting ARCs.

All Things Urban Fantasy has officially announced that she’s running The 1st Annual Urban Fantasy Cover Art Awards for 2009.  The interesting thing about this is the only individuals who can nominated covers are authors/publishers, blog/site owners and any professionals in the industry.  I’m wondering why she’s not allowing readers to nominate covers since they are the ones who the covers are targeted at, but I’m sure she has her reasons.  Either way, the readers get to vote on the covers beginning December 1st with the winning cover being released on December 30th.

And last, if you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m a huge fan of SciFiGuy’s Weekend Report and while it may look like I swipe a lot of his stuff, I don’t.  Seriously…between the two of us, you will not be lacking in F/UF/PNR news, so you should definitely be checking him out.  Plus, he’s way better at finding all the covers.

Contests:
I have two copies of Kelly Gay’s The Better Part of Darkness and I can only read one.  Who would like the other one?  Tell me why you want to read this novel before my next news posting and you’ll be entered to win it.  I’ll post the winner in my next news posting which could be tomorrow, Wednesday or Thursday.  So don’t delay!

Charlie Madigan is a divorced mother of one, and a kick-ass cop trained to take down the toughest human and off-world criminals. She’s recently returned from the dead after a brutal attack, an unexplained revival that has left her plagued by ruthless nightmares and random outbursts of strength that make doing her job for Atlanta P.D.’s Integration Task Force even harder. Since the Revelation, the criminal element in Underground Atlanta has grown, leaving Charlie and her partner Hank to keep the chaos to a dull roar. But now an insidious new danger is descending on her city with terrifying speed, threatening innocent lives: a deadly, off-world narcotic known as ash. Charlie is determined to uncover the source of ash before it targets another victim — but can she protect those she loves from a force more powerful than heaven and hell combined?

Jocelyn Drake is giving away a copy of White Witch, Black Curse by Kim Harrison.  Contest ends November 21st.

Melissa Marr is giving away multiple ARCs of her fourth Fae novel, Radiant Shadows.  There are various ways to enter and multiple deadlines, so head over and check them out.

About Jackie 3282 Articles
I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I wanna read The Better Part of Darkness because I haven’t come across any UF main characters that are single mothers, so I think it’ll be a very unique prospective in the genre.

  2. Thanks for the mention, Jackie! I would love to win a copy of THE BETTER PART OF DARKNESS. I’ve been intrigued by it ever since I read that the main character is a single mom. That is so unusual within the realm of urban fantasy that it makes it a must read for me. :)

  3. It sounds like a great book. Its not only that you dont see a lot of characters that are a divorced mom of one. But you really dont see a lot of female cops that are not only raising a child but have such a challenging job and that just cam back from the dead.

  4. I wasn’t trying to exclude anyone, I thought keeping the nominations to bloggers/authors etc. would ensure that we would do the heavy lifting (sifting through 100’s of covers both foreign and US) and save the fun (voting) for the readers. I wouldn’t be opposed to opening it all up to the readers next year if that is the consensus. In the meantime, readers can suggest covers to me or their favorite bloggers for consideration. Hope no one feels left out :)

And can I throw my hand in to win Kelly’s book? I can’t wait to read what a male siren is like.

  5. I didn’t mean for it sound like you were excluding anyone…me and my blunt mouth. I was just curious about your reasoning since most awards generally focus on readers and not the other way around. I like it though. :)

Definitely throw your hand in. :) I really don’t need two copies.

  6. Ohh, I want to read A BETTER PART OF DARKNESS because 1) FantasyDreamer recommended it and 2) I like the idea of an UF with a single mom as the main character and 3) Siren? Who is a guy? And from another dimension or something? I am intrigued.

  7. I would like to read this book because I’ve never read this author before and am in search of some new authors to love. I’m also intrigued by the divorced mother aspect.

  8. I’d love to read this book because I’m always looking for good debut novels by new writers and because I actually knew someone named Charlie Madigan in high school and I just think that’s a cool coincidence.

  9. Hi Jackie
I’d love to be entered in your contest for a copy of The Better Part of Darkness. I’ve had it on my wishlist for some time but didnt manage to get my hands on a review copy. It sounds really good, I love debut authors and I love urban fantasy!

  10. Nope, you’re still good. I gave a 30 minute warning via Facebook/Twitter, so basically just waiting until 11p to input all the names in to the List Randomizer. :)

  11. Hope i’m not too late to enter, i would love to read this novel because i love the urban fantasy genre and i’ve been hearing great reviews about the book and it sounds great.

    thanks for the giveaway :)
