Flirting with Chaotic Dead

Check out the cover for Flirt that Tez Says found. I like this cover.  Why do the Brits always have so much cooler covers on the novels that have really horrible US covers?

Dark Faerie Tales actually posted this a couple of days ago, but I’m a fan of this new series, so I wanted to post it again. Check out the cover Kalayna Price has for her second Haven novel, Twice Dead, which comes out February 23, 2010.

Jennifer Estep has a brand new urban fantasy series coming out January 26th titled Spider’s Bite and she has a prequel story available for free up at her site.

Spider’s Bargain: This is a short story that takes place before the events of Spider’s Bite, the first book in the Elemental Assassin series. In Spider’s Bargain, Gin Blanco takes on a corrupt cop, but only one of them will be left standing in the end. Click here to read it.

And it sounds like Jennifer has the first three novels written out since the first chapter of each novel – Spider’s Bite, Web of Lies and Venom – all have the first chapter posted.  Here are those excerpts:

I’m sure you’ve heard by now, but Disney has picked up the movie rights to Lauren Kate’s FallenSuvudu, Geek Tyrant and SciFi Wire are all reporting it (all with a source of the Hollywood Reporter, but the link appears to have reached its limit).  Not only has Disney acquired the rights to Fallen, but to the next three novels in the series.  It seems that Disney wants their Twilight blockbuster and are willing to try it with a love story involving two angels who fight over a girl.  I haven’t had a chance to read Fallen yet, so I’m curious, what has everyone else thought about it?

Lori Handeland has unveiled the cover for her fourth Phoenix Chronicles novel, Chaos Bites.

Kim Harrison has posted her tour schedule for Black Magic Sanction and I am excited!  For the past two years, I’ve had to go to Dayton, Ohio to see her, but now I have three different chances to check her out in Michigan!  She’s coming to Ann Arbor, Lansing and Grand Rapids in February which means I need to talk to the hobby about letting me buy the book and going to see her for my birthday.  Oh yea.  I’m excited.

Interesting.  I’ve been hearing a little about the Alan Elsner article at the Huffington Post and I have to say that I didn’t think it was that bad of an article…until I got past his six-point conclusion.  Overall, it was a pretty good editorial on the romance genre, he just shouldn’t have based his opinions on random books he picked up and called all readers of said books brainless.  I know there’s a wide range of romance novels and Sarah from Smart Bitches took to the defense in fantastic glory, but he does make one valid point – his six-point outline does describe a lot of historical romances, at least the ones with the trashy covers (and yes I am a avid fan of them).  Quite honestly, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard this argument, I hear it a lot from Jesse, but I do have to give Elsner credit on one thing – he did try a few novels before making his decisions whereas Jesse hasn’t; I just wished he would have gotten some recs on what to read first.

Speaking of which, Meljean Brook has an interesting study on the historical romance cover.  I had never really thought about it, but those three (the fourth one is new to me) are pretty much the historical romance cover.  I can think of a few that differ (i.e. the random back shot – That Scandalous Evening by Christina Dodd comes to mind), but that’s pretty much it.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I always liked that Christina Dodd cover (and I love that book) — and I agree, the back of a woman in a dress is another common cover look, especially from 5-8 years ago. It’s slowly been replaced by the softer, woman in a drapey-falling-off dress cover.

I should have noted that those covers were only Avon covers (I think they have taken that close-up couple and run with it). A few other publishers use the man-titty cover (Joanna Bourne comes to mind, and Loretta Chase’s before she moved to Avon, and Monica McCarty’s highlander books have men as well — but I’ll admit that I don’t really notice solo-man covers unless he’s super-hot or something.)

The same goes for the landscape/jewel cover. I think there might be a lot of them still out there, but they don’t really catch my eye, so I don’t notice the trend as much.

  2. You guys are killing me with these new release lists on all my favorite blogs. I love this post though because love to see covers that have better look than the ones we seem to get in the States. I also love all the sights you sent me to on here found out some great information and lots of fun reading all the different opinions.

Thanks for the entertainment and I will stay tuned….
