Guest Author: David Doub

Today, Literary Escapism is excited to welcome David Doub, author of the graphic novel, Dusk and Dusk – One Shot! David is currently getting ready for Indy Comic Book Week where he’ll have this gem of a book available: Dusk – One Shot

Eve’s life is a living hell of her own choosing. She struggles to survive in a dark world of magic and horror, all in an attempt to please her vampire master. Now Eve has crossed a line and and innocents have been harmed. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by a well meaning cabal of occultist that’s mandate is to police the occult world. What will happen when these two forces clash? Is there ever a”winner” in the supernatural underworld of Dusk?

Literary Escapism mainly features prose/novel writers but I’m letting you know that I write for the sequential arts. I write comic books. Don’t get me wrong, I like books fine, but I love comic, hence why I’m focusing on a career in funny books.

Of course I could have picked an easier industry to get into. Currently the top publishers of comic books look for writers that have previous experience, like in the fields of TV, Movies or novels. And the traditional book publisher are getting into doing comics/graphic novels, but they look at creators who’ve had some history in creator comics. Seems like a bit of close loop at first glance.

Well just like there are small press in prose , there is indy comic book publishers. So indy sometimes, it’s self publishing and vanity press. And that brings us to why I picked this week to do this guest article. The week of December 30th is Indy Comic Book Week. Now first off you may have noticed that I said Dec 30th, which is a Wednesday, and Wed. is the day comics are shipped to comic stores across the US. Comic fans are so trained to this fact that it has been joked about in several forms of pop culture (most recently the show Big Bang Theory).

But on Indy Comic Book Week, an opportunity arose, and indy creators seized it. Diamond, the default distributor for the majority of Comic Shop, found that because Christmas and New Years both falling on Fridays there would be too many delay involved with shipping so they decided to just skip the last week of the year and not ship anything.

Of course the comic book shops are still open that whole week, but with no new product coming in to bring people to the stores for their weekly comic book fix. So a bunch of Indy Creators have joined together to provide original books for that week. Yes, it’s a tad self serving because it’s also an opportunity for indy books to get into stores that normally they may not have, but I like to think of the event is for everyone’s mutual benefit.

There are some many choices in entertainment, from movies, books, comics, games, to web content, it’s easy for some good book to get lost in the shuffle. So during this holiday week, if you have a few spare moments, go by http://www.indycomicbookweek.com find a participating store near you and check it out.

And since I’m comfortable with being a smidge self-serving here’s a little bit about the book I’ll have out this week –

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
