Stormy Magic

Check out what All Things Urban Fantasy found…it’s the cover for Devon Monk’s Magic on the Storm, the fourth Allie Beckstrom novel.

Kim Harrison has added an excerpt for Black Magic Sanction to her website.  We’re told it’s not the entire first chapter, but a good chunk of it.

In November, when Kelly Meding’s Three Days to Dead was getting ready to release, Suvudu offered serialized versions of The Hoarder and Pride Before Fall, two short stories set in the same world.  Now, Suvudu is offering those same two stories as free PDF downloads.  Both of these stories can be read on their own, introducing you to Dreg City, or giving you the chance to head back before As Lie the Dead, which comes out this summer.

Interviews:

Secret Dreamworld of a Bookholic has published the latest Bookworms Carnival, which happens to focus on series.  Kathrin has a great collection of reviews of different series, so its definitely worth checking out.

Fifty-Two Stories has published the second story of the new year – Mother Catherine by Zora Neale Hurston.

Lurv a la Mode has a fabulous collection of upcoming YA novels and their splendid covers.  I’m not a huge YA reader, but there were a few that caught my eye…definitely worth a look.

SciFiGuy has another amazing collection of interviews, contests and news in his Weekend Report.  One thing Doug found that I had missed – Marta Acosta announced the title to the fourth Casa Dracula novel.  We can look forward to Haunted Honeymoon at Casa Dracula.

Dirty Sexy Books has developed the 10 Commandments of Urban Fantasy.  I have to agree with 9 of 10, but the the one I’m iffy on (#8 There shall be a Pet, or an Annoying Roommate, or a Sentient Car) is definitely subjective.  Three series that pop up that do not have this feature are the Anita Blake, Kate Daniels and the Night Huntress novels.  Am I wrong?

Contests:

Psychic Cat

Angie Fox is giving away a copy of her novel, A Tale of Two Demon Slayers, which releases January 26th.  Contest ends January 19th. In order to enter, you need to tell Angie what supernatural pet you would end up with by taking her quiz.  Here is what I ended up with:

Your ideal pet is Nostra, the psychic cat!
Sure, cats are smart, but yours can see the future. Literally. Treat her to some cat nip, or perhaps a nice scratch behind the ears…and maybe she’ll let you know what else is in store.

Trisha’s Book Blog is giving away five copies of Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty’s House of Horrors. Contest ends January 28th.

Dark Faerie Tales is giving away a copy of Becca Fitzgerald’s Hush, Hush. Contest ends February 3rd.

Want to help out the earthquake victims in Haiti?  Shiloh Walker and Jeri Smith-Ready are both holding contests for those who do help out by donating anything they can.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Hi Jackie – Okay, you got me, there are a few exceptions to my list of Urban Fantasy Commandments. But wait, doesn’t Anita have angelfish? I’m only three books into that series, so please don’t tell me if they croak. I was sad enough when her penguins were ruined by collateral gore. I do beg off on the Night Huntress novels though, since I consider that series more of a paranormal romance than urban fantasy.

Thanks for the mention. This is a fantastic links list.

  2. LOL Jackie. The one UF rule I liked you disagree with. Let’s see when it comes to Anita in later books I would definitely say Nathaniel is both annoying and a pet :) Great mid-week update as always!
