Legend

I came across this movie earlier today and I’m curious, has anyone seen it or even heard of it?  It’s called Legend and stars Tom Cruise and Tim Curry.  Here’s the kicker though, it was released in 1986.  Other than the fact that there was a young Cruise running around the forest and acting all innocence, the thing that really caught my eye was the landscape.  It was really magnificent and I thought it really had that fantasy feel down.  I didn’t get to see a lot of it, but it piqued my interest and I’m curious to see if anyone else heard of it.  Here’s the synopsis from IMDB.

A demon who seeks to create eternal night by destroying the last of the unicorns and marrying a fairy princess is opposed by the forest boy Jack and his elven allies in this magical fantasy. Two different versions of this picture feature soundtracks by either Tangerine Dream or Jerry Goldsmith. Written by Keith Loh

A magical adventure which features elves, demons and other mythical creatures. Darkness, the personification of evil, plans to disperse eternal night in the land where this story takes place, by killing every unicorn in the world. Although he looks unbeatable, Jack and his friends are disposed to do everything to save the world and princess Lili (who Darkness intends to make his wife) from the hands of this evil monster. Written by Chris Makrozahopoulos

I think I’m going to try and locate a copy of this.  Even if it isn’t all that great, the visual effects are enough to make me go hunting.

Also, I have a news post ready to go, but considering it’s 90% interviews, I’m going to wait and see what tomorrow brings.

  1. I’ve watched Legend too many times to count! Up there with the movie Labyrinth. Legend is a wonderful, romantic fairy tale. A true gem from the 80’s.

  2. I grew up on Legend & Labyrinth & The Last Unicorn. Legend has a sweet story, beautiful scenery, scary muppets & unicorns of course! This is movie was an integral part of my love of fantasy to both read and watch. A beautiful fairy tale.

  3. Yup I have seen it. My fave scene is the winter scene with the Unicorn running. I love this one. Watched it about 10 times before my parents forbade me to watch it again.

  4. OMG, I loved this movie when I was a kid! Legend, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, The Last Unicorn, Neverending Story, and Princess Bride were my favorite movies when I was younger.

  5. This was a fun movie. The extended version is MUCH better though. If you’re going to see it for the first time start there. The back story is better explained and makes the whole thing make better sense. ;)

  6. Legend is a wondeful movie that I have shared with my children.I agree with the others about Labrynth and Legend being really good movies but I also throw in The Dark Crystal being one of my favorite fantasies along with Legend and Labrynth.

  7. Legend is a fantastic movie that I watch with my children all the time. I am a big fan of movies like that. I agree with other people that it ranks up there with Labyrinth and Willow in our family.

  8. When I was younger, we taped it off the TV with the VCR. I nearly wore the tape out. Between this, Labyrinth, Willow, The Dark Crystal, Neverending Story, Princess Bride, Ladyhawk and, strangely, Flight of the Navigator, my movie watching as a kid was sorted.

  9. Woah, I’ve never even heard of this movie. I am so going to add it to my Netflix. I’m a HUGE Tim Curry fan and I’d love to see Cruise in a fantasy role just out of curiosity. Ha ha ;)

  10. I love this movie. I saw it when it first came out. I owned it on a tape and now I upgraded to a DVD! I just think it’s the sweetest movie. Tom Cruise is so adorable. Whenever I ran across it on TV I will stop and watch it. Really a pretty movie. It’s worth watching if you love fantasy movies and Tom Cruise.

  11. Heh, I watched this for the first time a few years ago when I was home with the flu. It’s one of those movies that if I’d first seen it as a kid, I would have loved it, but as a sick-and-slightly-delirious twenty-something, I was like “Huh. Tom Cruise in a loincloth. And there’s a unicorn for some reason? And why is everything (and I do mean Everything) covered in glitter?”

  12. As I recall, this had some interesting symbolism. I wonder why Hell Boy and the bad guy in this movie look similar?

  13. GASPPPPPPP. You haven’t seen Legend?!?! Yeah I LOVED Tim Curry’s character in this one :P

It’s cheesy in a kind of awesome way. You must watch it.

  14. You can tell the age of your readers from this posting!

I fell in love with Legend while in high school. Highly romantic with a very strong fairy tale vibe. And who doesn’t love unicorns?

Not quite such a fan of Tom Cruise these days, but I definitely enjoy this movie.
