Continuing with The Eternal Kiss anthology, edited by Trisha Telep, I just finished the third story, Sword Point by Maria Snyder. I’m a huge fan of Snyder’s Study series, so I was eagerly awaiting to read her vampire story for this collection.
I have to say, Sword Point is an excellent introduction to a new series if Snyder was so inclined. We’re introduced to two individuals, Ava and Jarett, that seem to have a lot in common, but Snyder doesn’t really spend a lot of time developing their characters any more than she needs to. She gives us enough glimpses into their characters that I became intrigued by their story and would love to hear more about them.
The fact that both of them are associated with a fencing school gives an interesting backdrop for a new vampire hunting crew. From what I can tell, we have these world class fencers who teach classes during the day and then take on clans of vampires at night. We’re given just enough to get an idea of what they do, but we don’t see much else. This works in the fact that if we don’t see any novels featuring Ava and Jarett (or their world), we’re not tied up in a new vampire hunting squad; however, if we do see more, Snyder has given herself a lot of room to further develop this new group without having to worry too much about what happened in Sword Point.
Overall, Sword Point was a great story and one that I’m not surprised with. I’m already a fan of Snyder’s writing and Sword Point has changed that.
