Undead is Very in Right Now by SR Brennan

Continuing with The Eternal Kiss anthology, edited by Trisha Telep, I just finished the fifth story, Undead is Very In Right Now by Sarah Rees Brennan.  This was my first story by Brennan and I have to say she got my attention.

Undead is Very In Right Now was a really cute story that not only worked for focusing on a vampire, but could easily be applied to any real life celebrity.  The story centers around a pretty young vampire, Christian, who is picked to join a new boy band.  Vampires are out in this world, but they aren’t as out there as a lot of series.  They still have that mystery around them and not everyone really thinks about them existing.  That may sound mean, but that’s the reaction I felt when it was revealed to the band members that their “publicity stunt” of Christian being a vampire wasn’t a stunt.

What makes this work with real life star situations is that Christian ends up meeting one of the bands fans who singles him out because he’s a vampire.  She believes all the hype that is out there about vampires and rock stars, but in the end, she begins to see it as the illusion it is.  What the publicists put out there isn’t always the truth and it’s kind of a bitter sweet moment.

Overall, the story itself is sweet and a really easy read.  It’s not long or drawn out, but tells a story that is totally engaging enough that it kept my attention and I still remember it after reading it so long ago.  I wouldn’t call it one of the best stories within The Eternal Kiss, but it’s definitely worth it to go out and find a copy of this anthology.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
