Ill Wind by R. Caine

The first novel in Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series, Ill Wind introduces us to a world where there are people who help control the weather so it doesn’t cause as much devastation as it could. I actually kind of like the idea of the book, and I want to see what happens in the next novel, Heat Stroke, but I’m not crazy about how it ended. I will say that the book did incorporate one technique that I kind of hate – flashbacks galore. Every time the main character had to talk about how she knew a person or what happened, we ended up going back to that event in history. The transitions are not exactly smooth and it can take a moment to realize we’ve changed scenes. In my opinion, flashbacks tend to distract from the plot, which can make it hard getting back to the original problem. I know they are there to give us more background on the main character, but they generally happen at odd times.

Overall, the book is good and I am going to try the next one. I’m not crazy about what Caine did to the main character, but she obviously has a plan. If you like her Morganville Vampire series, then you’ll probably like this one as well.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
