Escapist Newsletter (Vol 4 Issue 2)

Check out what Tez Says has found.  It’s the newest Anita Blake cover, this time for Bullet.  I’m still not totally sold on these new covers, but at least this time around, the item on the cover has something to do with the title and perhaps the contents.  She also has the cover for Jessica Verday’s The Haunted.

New Dates:

Changed Dates:

From the Author Sites

First up, Karen Marie Moning has announced new covers for the Fever series.  Moning is saying there is still some tweaks that will happen, but I have to say that I am digging the ones she has posted right now.  I like a lot.  I can’t wait to add these to my shelves.

Some exciting news for Lilith Saintcrow fans.  It was announced today that Orbit has bought all five of the Dante Valentine novels and will be releasing them as an omnibus in March 2011.  I cannot wait for this set to come out.  While the technology gets to me a little, the chemistry between Dante and Japh has definitely stayed with me over the years and I can’t wait until I can dive back into them.

New Excerpts:

Gena Showalter has plans to begin the next Lords of the Underworld novel today and she announced that the hero for The Darkest Secret will be Amun.

Rachel Vincent announced the stops she’ll be making for her My Soul to Save blog tour as well as what will be up for grabs for all visitors.  It looks like each stop has at least two copies of My Soul to Save to be given away, so definitely worth marking your calenders.

Jackie Kessler has revealed the cover blurb for Hunger, the first in her new YA series Horsemen of the Apocalypse:

“Thou art the Black Rider. Go thee out unto the world.”

Lisabeth Lewis has a black steed, a set of scales, and a new job: she’s been appointed Famine. How will an anorexic seventeen-year-old girl from the suburbs fare as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?

Traveling the world on her steed gives Lisa freedom from her troubles at home: her constant battle with hunger, and her struggle to hide it from the people who care about her. But being Famine forces her to go places where hunger is a painful part of everyday life, and to face the horrifying effects of her phenomenal power. Can Lisa find a way to harness that power — and the courage to battle her own inner demons?

If you’ve been wondering what’s going to appear in the upcoming werewolf anthology, Running with the Pack, SF Signal has a completely listing of which stories will be included. Contributing authors include Marie Brennan, Maria Snyder, Carrie Vaughn, plus 19 other authors. Running with the Pack is edited by Ekaterina Sedia.

Check out the gorgeousness I just found over on Karen Chance’s page! It’s a John Pritkin short story titled, Shadowland, and will be available for free on Chance’s website March 31st.  I’ll be honest, I didn’t have a solid image of Pritkin before now, but I am digging this guy!  Shadowland is the first of a series of short stories, set in what I am going to assume in the Cassie Palmer world.  So exciting!  For those wondering, the cover artist is Ida Larson and will be doing the covers for all of the upcoming short stories.

Jordan Summers revealed that there will be a second Blood Lite anthology released and her story, Tastes Like Chicken, will be included. This anthology will feature stories with a humorous dark fantasy/horror bent.

If you’re a European reader, make sure you do some investigating with your local bookstore chains.  Charlaine Harris has a European Tour schedule for February 28 through March 12th, but she really doesn’t say where.  I’m assuming if she’s going over at the end of the month, that dates and locations are confirmed, so something is going to be happening somewhere.  It’s just a matter of finding out where.

For those in the Metro Detroit area, Colleen Gleason will be at the Caroline Kennedy Library in Dearborn Heights on February 10th at 7pm.  I think I’m going to try and talk the hubby into letting me go since it’s relatively close by.  Her next stops will be in Lansing and Ann Arbor (March 11th & 12th respectively).

It looks like we have a release date for the fifth and final book in Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series, Shadowfever.  Is it the final book or will she be doing six?  For some reason, I’m thinking this will be the end and we’ll get it on December 28, 2010.

Patricia Briggs has posted her tour schedule for Silver Borne.  Unfortunately, she’s not coming anywhere near Michigan this time, but if you’re on the West Coast, there may be good news for you.

  • Seattle, WA: March 30 at the University Book Store, at 7:00 pm.
  • Portland, OR: March 31 at the Cedar Hills Powell’s, 7:00 pm.
  • Los Angeles, CA: April 6 at the Huntington Beach B&N, 7:00 pm.
  • San Diego, CA: April 7 at Mysterious Galaxy, 7:00 pm.
  • Houston, TX: April 9 at Murder By the Book, 6:30 pm.
  • Minneapolis, MN: April 10 at Uncle Hugo’s, 6:30 pm.

More Briggs news, don’t be expecting a new Alpha Omega novel anytime soon.  She has three books she’s going to write before that one and the estimated release date isn’t until the Fall 2011.  Between now and then, she’s going to rewrite her first novel, Masques, as well as work on it’s sequel. Wolfsbane.  Never fear though, the sixth Mercy Thompson novel will be up next and is due out sometime in the Spring of 2011.

The 2nd Phantom Corps/4th Federation novel by Lauren Dane has a title.  We’ll be getting Mesmerized sometime in 2011.

Gerry Bartlett has some exciting news.  There will be a sixth Glory St. Clair novel and it will be out sometime this Fall.

Do we know that fourth Chicagoland Vampires novel by Chloe Neill will be called Hard Bitten?

What Bears Repeating

MaryJanice Davidson announced on her FB fanpage the title for the next Queen Betsy novel.  We’ll have Undead and Unfinished on July 6, 2010.  The first chapter is already posted on her FB page.

Kerrelyn Sparks has listed the title to the ninth Love at Stakes novel in her upcoming releases pageEat, Prey and Love will feature Carlos Panterra, a sexy werepanther that I have yet to meet.  This is another great series I need to get caught up on.

One of the girls in my online PNR group found this information on the next two Argeneau novels by Lynsay Sands:

August 31, 2010: Born To Bite, the thirteenth book in the Argeneau/Rogue Hunter series, will be coming out this September. Armand Argeneau has been living on a farm squirreled away from public life for decades without anyone bothering him. Until now that is. Lucian has been kind enough to volunteer Armand to babysit Eshe d’Aureus in order to protect her from a rogue vampire out for revenge. In reality, Eshe was sent to Armand on assignment to find clues to explain his many wives’ ‘accidental’ deaths. This installment of the Argeneau/Rogue Hunter series will also answer the unanswered questions from Nicholas’s story, The Renegade Hunter.

November 30, 2010: Hungry For You, the fourteenth book in the Argeneau/Rogue Hunter series will be coming out this December. It involves the last of the Willan sisters, Alex, and one of Martine Argeneau’s older sons, Cale. Alex is a successful chef and restaurateur trying to expand her business and the new location’s debut seems to be riddled with bad luck. Can Cale, a successful European chef. . . er . . . businessman, help her keep her business afloat and still keep her frazzled attention long enough to see him for who he really is . . . the love of her life?

Larissa Ione announced in her newsletter the next Demonica novel will feature Lore’s sister (Lore’s story is Ecstasy Unveiled) and will be out sometime late in August.

I saw Anya Bast talking about Dark Enchantment on Facebook the other night.  I haven’t seen any mention of a Dark Enchantment prior to this, so I’m going to stagger a guess and say this is the title for the third Dark Magic novel.

Featured Book

The first in a series of paranormal vampire mysteries begins with the abduction of a sexpot vampire with “the smooth, flawless skin of a seventeen-year old,” and a dress that “rippled with every shift of her well-muscled form.” Several more impossible crimes follow, complete with near-endless descriptions of effortlessly subverted security hurdles. Detective DeChance is brought in by the vampires’ council of elders to find the perpetrator. Tall, dark and handsome, DeChance is also an accomplished wizard whose spells protect him from vampires, and his girlfriend (also tall and beautiful) is an expert in the magic of crystals. As the kidnapper taunts his victim with details of his plot (in a voice “empty of mirth but dripping with contempt”), the flat plot spins out predictably with mystical smoke and plenty of explosions, but little real craft. – From Publishers Weekly

January Reviews

From the Reader

I missed out on the initial outrage, so if you’re out of the loop like I was on the whole Macmillan/Amazon debacle, HASTAC has a great article summarizing everything, with her own commentary as well.  Personally, it’s stunts like these that are starting to get me really annoyed with Amazon.  I love my Kindle, but I really don’t want them dictating what I can and can not read, which is essentially what they are doing.

From Suvudu’s Free Library, they’ve just added Sheepfarmer’s Daughter by Elizabeth Moon.  Suvudu also has a downloadable PDF guide that serves as an introduction regarding the new nine book Star Wars series.  The series takes place 40 years after the end of Return of the Jedi, with our favorite characters being legends, and involves a whole new set of heroes.  The Fate of the Jedi series has begun with Outcast by Aaron Allston.

It’s Dark in the Dark has a great collection of images from the upcoming Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movie.  I so can’t wait for this movie.  Burton does great creepy fantasy and I have a feeling his take on Alice is going to be breathtaking.

SyFy is adding a bunch of new fantasy movies to their Saturday Original Movies.  The first up is going to be their take on Beauty and the Beast, which will air on February 27th.  Here’s a quick summary:

Starring Estella Warren (Planet of the Apes), Beauty and the Beast is not the traditional Disney fairy tale. In this gritty celebration of Valentine’s Day, a young Beauty (Warren) with a gift for healing helps a deformed Prince (Rhett Gilles, Wraiths of Roanoke) regain his throne and defeat the ruthless nobleman who wants to be king — and then together they try to destroy a power-hungry witch. Beauty and the Beast was directed by David Lister and written by Gavin Scott.

Other movies in the works include takes on Red Riding Hood, Hansel, Aladdin, Black Forest and 8TH Voyage of Sinbad.

SciFiGuy has another great Weekend Urban Fantasy Report.

Haitian Relief Charity Auction

For What It’s Worth has come up with a great way of raising money for Doctors Without Borders to help assist their efforts in Haiti.  There are several auctions planned, but the one thing they all have in common is all the prizes will be signed UF/PNR novels from some of our favorite authors. The second auction is up and features Ilona Andrews’ Magic Bites and On The Edge.  Upcoming authors include Cynthia Eden – Eternal Hunter, Jeaniene Frost – all 4 books from her Night Huntress series, Jeri Smith-Ready – Either Wicked Games or Bad To The Bone, Gena Showalter, with more in the works.

About Jackie 3282 Articles
I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
