Twilight by S. Meyer

I wanted so much to hate Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. I really did. I have been reading vampire novels for a long time now (since before the paranormal genre really became popular) and when I heard about this author, I really thought it wasn’t going to be something I would enjoy.  I am more into the adult themed books which usually come with a lot of descriptive violence and sex and I couldn’t see how this would compare.

Isabella Swan’s move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella’s life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife-between desire and danger.Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

However, a friend gave me the movie to watch and I sat down dreading it the whole time but I felt obliged to check it out.  Surprise surprise! I loved the movie! (With a few exceptions like the stupid glitter thing and the bad effects, which to the authors credit has nothing to do with her writing.)  Which meant, I HAD to read the book! Just had to! I heard there was so many more details I would be missing if I didn’t, so I picked it up and went to reading.  I could NOT put Twilight down. The story just had me hooked. I wanted to know more about the Cullens and how they came to be.  I loved the interaction between the characters and her *veggie* vampires and how it allowed Bella to become a part of their world.

Overall, my hatred for Meyer and Twilight was premature and I think it was due to all the hype that it got with the movie.  Usually when something gets that hyped up, and I get excited about it, I end up hating it due to those high expectations, but that didn’t happen this time.  So, if you are a fan of the Paranormal/Romance/Vampires you will love this book.

  1. Hooray! Believe it or not, I felt the same way, and that was even before the book became so popular–I dithered over buying it forever, then finally got the paperback, still expecting not to like it much. It surprised me with how great it was!

  2. What concerns me about the books is that they are marketed as Young Adult, which is a whole different ballgame than books that are marketed to adults. Bella is all about “the guy”, and as the mother of a daughter (thankfully grown now), that troubles me.

My daughter hates the books. And she wonders, exactly what USE is Edward or his siblings to the world. They don’t DO anything but exist.

I’ve never been a mom who limited what my kids could read, but a book that is offered in the juvenile or young adult genre ought to offer more of a punch.

  3. I liked this book too. But it went downhill for me in NEW MOON. Will you be continuing to read this series? Interested to see your thoughts on the other books.

  4. So glad you enjoyed it! I did too; it’s actually the book that got me back into reading after having baby #3!! AND, it got me interested in paranormal romance which I’d never read before.

  5. The glitter part is so distracting! I’ve seen a t-shirt that says Real Vampires Don’t Glitter, and I agree.

I understand the concern about Bella being all about “the guy.” On a positive side, my goddaughter, who is eighteen, hasn’t read the books, but we go to the movies together as they’re released. She was very bothered in New Moon about (a) Bella basically “using” Jacob and (b) the way Bella pined for Edward to the point of just sitting in her room for months.

  6. Janicu, I have actually finished the series and the last two were the best in the series in my opinion.
Third being Twilight, and last place New Moon. So don’t let New Moon get you down, because it gets so much better in the third and super good in the fourth :D

I think New Moon bothered a lot of people, because of the overly done “teen angst” as well as the using of Jacob. Though there is a reason Jacob is in her life but I can’t say anything more then that for those who haven’t read the entire series yet!:)

    • I’m the opposite. I thought New Moon was good. Yeah it had a lot of drama, but I was in tears for 75% of the book. Granted, it doesn’t take too much for me to get teary-eyed, but still. Now Breaking Dawn, I could have done without that one.
