All Hallows by R. Caine

Continuing with The Eternal Kiss anthology, edited by Trisha Telep, I just finished the eighth story, All Hallows by Rachel Caine, which is a part of her Morganville Vampire series.

All Hallows takes place the following Halloween after The Dead Girls Dance, which also happens to be after all the events of Carpe Corpus.  Eve is our main character and we actually get a little insight into her relationship with Michael.  Nothing really new, but it’s definitely a side of them we really don’t get to see a lot of.

The events of All Hallows is totally not dependent on having read the series.  Some past events are mentioned, but nothing that would make anyone feel like they are missing something.  The conflict for the story is all about Miranda and I would say if you haven’t met her before, she might confuse you a bit, but not really.  Her history is mentioned briefly enough that it gives the idea of how screwed up she is, or at least how naive.

Honestly, if someone hasn’t read the Morganville series before, All Hallows would be a nice introduction.  The pacing of the story is well done and the characters are not so developed where back information is needed, but more alluded to.  If I hadn’t read the previous novels, All Hallows would definitely intrigue me enough to pick up Glass House.  Granted, I would probably be annoyed at the beginning since the main character wouldn’t be Eve, but that’s another thing.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I always enjoy the short stories from other Morganville characters’ POV’s. I really hope we get one from Oliver at some point–I’d just love to know what he really thinks of everyone. I have a feeling his inner commentary will involve a lot of eye-rolling and moaning about ‘back in my day…’
