Look Who is at RT: Karen Miller

Can you introduce yourself to my readers a little?
I’m an Australian writer of speculative fiction, so far fantasy and some media-based work with Star Wars and Stargate SG-1. I’ve been a fan of spec fic since I was a child, and can’t imagine myself ever not loving it. I also write as K E Mills.

Can you introduce us to the world that you have created?
Well, so far I’ve created 3 different story worlds. The first is Lur, which is the kingdom where the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker (The Innocent Mage) and Fisherman’s Children (The Prodigal Mage) series are set. It’s a small country that spent hundreds of years isolated from the rest of the world, peaceful and prosperous. That changes when an old enemy comes knocking on the door. The second is the world of the Godspeaker trilogy (Empress), where there’s a major culture clash between the harsh culture of Mijak and the more gentle culture of Ethrea. In that series, there is a push by Mijak to conquer the world and impose its rule upon it. The goal of the Ethreans and their allies is to push back and contain them. The third world I’ve created is the world of the Rogue Agent series (Witches Incorporated). It’s sorta kinda like an alternative to our world, only magic is prevalent, and the flavour is closest to late Victorian/Early Edwardian England.

Will this be your first RT or are you a veteran? Any advice for those who are going for the first time?
Yes, this is my first one. I’m really really excited. I’ve heard such great reports about the event, I’m sure I’m going to have a blast.

Are you speaking on any panels during RT? Are there any you are looking forward to?
Yes, I am! Wednesday at 2.30 I’m on ‘From Regency to Rygel’ – worldbuilding. On Thursday it’s ‘Fantasy Unplugged’ at 11.15. On Friday at 2.45 it’s ‘Kicking Butt and Kissing Heroines’ and on Sunday it’s Author Speed Dating at 12.05. And I have to say I am eagerly looking forward to them all.

If someone were wanting to meet up with you at RT, who should they look for?
The short jetlagged Australian.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
