and Falling, Fly by S. White

I initially expected and Falling, Fly by Skyler White to be the usual paranormal fare, but I can honestly say that it was anything but.

In a dark and seedy underground of burned-out rock stars and angels-turned- vampires, a revolutionary neuroscientist and a fallen angel must put medicine against mythology in an attempt to erase their tortured pasts…but at what price?

Olivia, vampire and fallen angel of desire, is hopeless…and damned. Since the fall from Eden, she has hungered for love, but fed only on desire. Dominic O’Shaughnessy is a neuroscientist plagued by impossible visions. When his research and her despair collide at L’Otel Mathillide-a subterranean hell of beauty, demons, and dreams-rationalist and angel unite in a clash of desire and damnation that threatens to destroy them both.

In this fractures Hotel of the Damned, Olivia and Dominic discover the only force consistent in their opposing realities is the deep, erotic gravity between them. Bound to each other finally in a knot of interwoven freedoms, Dominic and Olivia-the vision-touched scientist and the earth-bound angel, reborn and undead-encounter the mystery of love and find it is both fall…and flight.

The story could have almost been something that I’ve read what seems like a million times before. The idea that love was what had the power to save has certainly been done.  However, Skyler White makes it seem fresh and new. The writing in and Falling, Fly is just fantastic. It’s imaginative and thoughtful, done in such a way that you could never mistake it for any other book. The way White writes is mind blowing, captivating, and artistically beautiful.

In and Falling, Fly, vampires are fallen angles who feel nothing except for when their feeding. And even that isn’t really enough. Olivia has tried to find a way to be saved. To escape her fate as a denizen of Hell, and return to her heavenly origins. But after thousand of years of searching, she’s finally given up and decided to accept her fate. The way that Olivia thought was exactly what I would think someone who has lived as long as her would approach thinking. She was world weary and detached from normal interactions with people. I got the sense of her age that, until recently, I didn’t realize I was missing from other books that have had long-lived characters. Dominic was at times a bit frustrating in his insistence to believe that his visions of past lives were delusions. His need to rationalize everything made things more difficult on him, but I can’t help but think that that is probably the normal response to all of a sudden realizing that you’ve live, loved, and died thousands of times.

I don’t want to say too much about the plot, but I will say that the story just adds to the characters. It  slowly drew me into Olivia and Dominic’s world and had me rooting for them when others were trying to separate them.

Need I stress how much I loved this book? It was everything that was promised and so much more.  Fans of paranormal romance will certainly love this. If and Falling, Fly is any indication of the sort of writing that is to come from Skyler White, then I think that we can be expecting some great things from her. I know I  am eagerly anticipating what she can come up with next.

  1. I just started this book for my monthly book club and I am completely enthralled. Skyler White’s words literally paint a picture and each scene just comes alive. I just wish I had those same words to describe how well she writes Olivia and Dominic so others would understand what a great new voice she is.
