Ill Wind by R. Caine

Ill Wind by Rachel Caine was a wonderful breath of fresh air; I have been so tired of romances where the characters just fall into bed with one another after a few seconds of meeting!

First in the new Weather Warden series…

Joanne Baldwin is a Weather Warden. Usually, all it takes is a wave of her hand to tame the most violent weather. But now, she’s trying to outrun another kind of storm: accusations of corruption and murder. So, she’s resorting to the very human tactic of running for her life…

Her only hope is Lewis, the most powerful warden known. Unfortunately, he’s stolen not one but three bottles of Djinn-making him the most wanted man on earth. Still, she’s racing hard to find him-before the bad weather closes in fast…

I loved the characters in Ill Wind as well as the story; it was very different from anything I have read thus far. I do have to say that I did find the author to be a little overly descriptive, but it wasn’t bad enough for me to be really annoyed about it.

The main character was not very likable in the beginning, hell I was confused for the first quarter of the book as I didn’t know what the heck was going on. I mean a little suspense and guessing is ok but this was flat out confusion to the max. Caine doesn’t give too much information at the start and the lead character has flashbacks that are confusing and makes you wonder if you are in the present or still in the past. I really didn’t start knowing what was going on until I was at least halfway into Ill Wind. At that point the story starts picking up and it just gets a whole lot better.

The plot starts making sense and picks up quite a bit. We learn why she feels like she has to run and on the way a bunch of interesting events happen to her. There is a nice mix of romance and action in this book and a solid “who done it?” type plot.

The character development picks up quite a bit and you get to know whats going on and why things are happening. I really liked David and I feel there is more to him then the author is letting on.  Plus the twists Caine puts in there toward the end were not something I expected at all! The world Caine has created is really amazing and it definitely gets better the more you read.

Overall I am glad that I read on and didn’t put Ill Wind down, I can’t wait to pick up the next book as I am very interested in finding out what happens next!

  1. Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series was my stepping stone into urban fantasy. The cover blurb and art drew me in and I just devoured the book. From there I went to Butcher, Harrison, Pettersson, etc.

  2. I enjoyed the Weather Warden series up until the last couple of books. The last few books seemed to be more about destroying the world and less about the relationships between the characters.

  3. I find this series really irritating to read. The main protagonist would act so stupidly out of character just to give the story a dilemma and so that she could save the world on fast cars. And this pattern repeats on every book. I stopped reading by book 3.

  4. I’ve got to admit that I liked the earlier books the best but I’ve read all but the one coming out in Aug. Anyone know if Total Eclipse will end the series?
