At Grave’s End by Jeaniene Frost

The character development in At Grave’s End by Jeaniene Frost was superb (as always). There is not one character that was unbelievable. Frost makes the story come alive with her character building and that’s not an easy thing to accomplish.

Some things won’t stay buried . . . at grave’s end

It should be the best time of half-vampire Cat Crawfield’s life. With her undead lover Bones at her side, she’s successfully protected mortals from the rogue undead. But though Cat’s worn disguise after disguise to keep her true identity a secret from the brazen bloodsuckers, her cover’s finally been blown, placing her in terrible danger.

As if that wasn’t enough, a woman from Bones’s past is determined to bury him once and for all. Caught in the crosshairs of a vengeful vamp, yet determined to help Bones stop a lethal magic from being unleashed, Cat’s about to learn the true meaning of bad blood. And the tricks she’s learned as a special agent won’t help her. She will need to fully embrace her vampire instincts in order to save herself—and Bones—from a fate worse than the grave.

The plots and twists in At Grave’s End were outstanding.  Frost delivers a great story, jam packed with action that leaves her readers always wanting more – I could not put this book down!  As I’ve mentioned, she does an excellent job with not only her main characters but her side characters as well:

  • Tate – I thought when I started reading these books that he would get over his thing for her; OR he wouldn’t and she would write it badly and he would end up being someone we hated.  I have to say kudos to Frost for writing him how she did because he is still the Tate he was before (a good and loyal man) but a whole lot better now that he is a vampire.  Obviously because he is the same good guy we grew to love but now he is a lot stronger and will live forever – yay! Added to that, his relationship with Bones is quite funny at times what with the comments back and forth.
  • Annette – Wow I hated this bitch when she was first introduced and look how far she has come. Again Frost could have gone in such a different way with this character but she made her believable, and in the end you can actually sympathize with her and NOT hate her even though she loves Bones the way she does.
  • Cat – What can I say here? I half expected Frost to write her being turned fully what with some of the comments Cat would make throughout the books. I am so very glad she stuck to her guns and stayed as unique as she is.
  • The mother – This is a HUGE one for me as this woman was hated for all of the first book and most of the second.  Her coming around really made the difference in this character and now she is more believable and lovable. It’s never fun to read about a family that can’t get along and I am glad Frost made the decision to have the mother be a little more reasonable. So now her quips with Bones are funny instead of ugh not this again, I just want to slap her.

At Grave’s End was heart wrenching to say the least.  I LOVE how much action Frost puts into her books as there is never a dull moment and At Grave’s End was no exception.  The sex, while there was little of it, was written really well and it was emotional, especially considering the circumstances.  I really like how Frost doesn’t drown her books with too much sex, and when there is a scene, it feels RIGHT. Kudos to her for that!

  1. I love these books. I just finished reading First Drop of Crimson and loved it as well. I want Tate and Vlad to get their own series, but we might have to make do with a book in the Night Huntress World.

    • Don’t quote me on this, but I want to say I heard someone mention that the next Night Huntress World novel was going to be Vlad. I want to say I heard it at RT, but again, my memory is faulty (really badly right now), so I could be making this up. Or maybe it was Ian?

  2. This was my favorite emotionally. I laughed so much and I cried more than any book I’ve ever read. It’s hard to pick a fave in this series but this one has depth beyond expectation. And soooo glad that Vlad may get his own book even if it’s only rumor. You got to love a “flaming” hottie like Vlad!

  3. Yeahm Vlad has to be my favorite character in this series. I really hope he gets his own book :D Or even series! /wishfulthinking
