In the Darkest Night by P. O’Shea

Since reading Edge of Dawn last year, which had Kel as a minor character, I have been impatiently waiting for In the Darkest Night by Patti O’Shea, the fourth Light Warriors novel. After learning a little about Kel in Edge of Dawn, I knew that his story would be explosive and Patti O’Shea didn’t let me down there.

Kel Andrews has spent the last year living with nightmares and flashbacks. Unwilling to share what happened, he’s withdrawn from his family and the Gineal council has removed him from his position as a troubleshooter. But when a woman shows up asking for protection from a demon, Kel reluctantly agrees to help–and finds himself facing an unexpected adversary, one he doesn’t know how to fight.

The Light Warrior books have always been a surprising series for me in the way they keep you turning pages. In the past I have found that books with magical elements throughout the book can be a little predictable or unbelievable, however, this series will have you believing magic exist around us without us knowing.

Both Farran and Kel are a little messed up and have skeletons in their closets, which gives the characters more depth. It makes them real, down to earth. You find yourself rooting for them, knowing that they have the power to come out on top.

In Edge of Dawn, Farran fights with the troubleshooters, not against them like she was supposed to, and now she is hiding out in Seattle from the Taireil.  When a demon named Seth and a group of Shadow Walkers attack her, Kel returns to the Troubleshooters she fought with for help.  Since she is a traitor to the Taireil, and can not return home unless she wishes to be killed, she has no choice – she is weak magically and would not be able to keep herself safe.   Kel Andrews, a troubleshooter and Gineal warrior, agrees to help Farran.

To add to the excitement and dramatics, Kel has issues of his own – he was held captive and tortured by the Taireil – and continues to fight own internal demons, all the while trying to keep Farran safe. Even though he can barely sleep due to the nightmares he still has, he knows he must put aside what he is going through to keep Farran safe.

This book leaves you guessing until the last moment on why Seth and the Shadow Walkers are after her. Throughout the books you suspect why, but the true reason is nothing you suspected.

In the Darkest Night by Patti O’Shea is a wonderful action packed urban fantasy novel. O’Shea is a magical story teller who can make you believe you are living the story with the characters.  The story is fast-paced but you can feel the emotions of the characters as you read it.
