Magic Bleeds by I. Andrews

You can not imagine the glee I went through when I found a copy of Ilona Andrew’s Magic Bleeds waiting for me at my door the other day.

Kate Daniels works for the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid, officially as a liaison with the mercenary guild. Unofficially, she cleans up the paranormal problems no one else wants to handle—especially if they involve Atlanta’s shapeshifting community.

When she’s called in to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, a bar midway between the territories of the shapeshifters and the necromancers, Kate quickly discovers there’s a new player in town. One who’s been around for thousands of years—and rode to war at the side of Kate’s father.

This foe may be too much even for Kate and Curran, the Lord of the Beasts, to handle. Because this time, Kate will be taking on family…

First off, for those waiting for some hot and sweaty Curran/Kate action, don’t bother borrowing Magic Bleeds from the library; go straight out and buy it. Like now.  Curran and Kate’s relationship definitely gets some development. That’s all I’m saying though.  Trust me.  You’re going to love these two.

One of the things I loved about Magic Bleeds was that it seemed to wrap up one aspect of Kate’s life without feeling like the series was ending.  On the contrary, this new development is totally going to mess with Kate’s life and I can’t wait to see what it does.  It almost feels like we’re ending one chapter in Kate’s life – that of the Pack – and evolving into a new chapter, one where the People are going to play a predominate role.

The one thing I do love about Andrews is their tendency to find the most unused myths and twist them into fabulous villains.  We’re given a great conflict involving a Babylonian deity and the connection she has to Kate is really going to stir things up.  Not only in her personal life, but with her professional one as well.  I have a feeling things are going to get really interesting where the Order is concerned.  In any case, a lot of the subplots are tied up and we’re even given a hint as to what is going to be happening in the future.  The People are definitely going to be involved, so I have a feeling we’ll be getting deeper into their organization than we’ve seen to date.

As for Kate (and Curran’s) development, we’re definitely seeing a side that hasn’t been there before.  Kate is tearing down a few of her emotional walls as well as reinforcing ones she already has.  Even Curran shows a side to him that, while not surprising, was one I wasn’t expecting.  And totally unrelated, but there’s something going on with Jim that is hinted at, but not explained.  I totally can’t wait to hear about him in Kate 5.

Overall, Magic Bleeds is another fabulous story and just reaffirms how much I adore the writing style of Ilona Andrews.  I have yet to be bored and there’s always something new and exciting going on with Kate.  I literally tore through Magic Bleeds in one afternoon and I know Ian was wondering why mama wasn’t paying as much attention to him (thank god for computer games that entertain 3 year olds).  So I may be a little bias, but definitely go out and get a copy of Magic Bleeds.  You won’t be sorry.

Simple warning…there may be spoilers in the comments.  There were things I would love to discuss, but I dislike revealing anything in my reviews.  However, if someone brings it up, I’ll jump in for sure.  You have been warned.  *grin*

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Great review Jackie! I haven’t read the fourth book yet, but will be reading it soon. I love Ilona and Gordon’s writing style and like you said it hasn’t gotten boring yet. :D
