The Wish List by G. Stevens

When I first saw the blurb for The Wish List by Gabi Stevens, it really caught my interest as it sounded like a really fun paranormal romance. However, I wish the story was able to keep my interest.

Kristin Montgomery is more than a little shocked when her aunts inform her they’re fairy godmothers. Worse, after dropping that bombshell they hand her a wand and head off on a world cruise. Now Kristin’s uncomplicated life as a CPA in San Diego has disappeared like magic and she not only has to deal with her burgeoning magical powers, but also a reluctant and distractingly sexy magical arbiter.

Tennyson Ritter is a historian. A scholar by choice, he is yanked from his studies to act as arbiter for the newly chosen fairy godmother. He doesn’t want to waste his time with a woman who doesn’t know anything about magic or the magical world, but soon the beguiling Kristin draws him away from his books and into her life.

But before Kristin can hone her skills and pass the tests necessary to fully claim her powers, she and Tennyson must work together to defend the world both magical and human against those that would claim her powers for their own.

Maybe it’s the mood I’m in, but I couldn’t stay focused on the story.  It was good, but there was really nothing exciting going on that made me want to continue on.  Honestly, there was a bit of predictability about the plot as well as the characters. Within the first few pages of Lucas’ appearance, I totally had him nailed as the villain.  Honestly, his bodyguard totally gives him away at that first meeting with Kristin and once the seed of doubt was planted, it didn’t take me long to see how all his actions were manipulative.  He wanted Kristin to like him.

At the same time, I do like Lucas’ character.  He is so arrogant and confident that it is so his undoing.  The ending not only showcases that, but it actually makes me think that Lucas is still a little boy at times – he so likes to throw tantrums when he doesn’t get his way.  Of all the characters in The Wish List, I have to say that he is my favorite.

As for Kristin and Tennyson, I’ve seen better chemistry.  I wouldn’t say they were perfect, but they were too compatible even when they weren’t suppose to be.  They share a lot of the same characteristics – stubbornness being the biggest one – and instead of butting heads a lot, there was a lot of logic involved as well.  That may sound weird, but they acquiesced too easily to each other.  I could’ve used more fireworks.  Although, I may be a little jaded too.  Lately, it seems like a lot of my paranormals have more of an erotic essence and Kristin and Tennyson were kind of tame.  I didn’t feel any heat.

Overall, for being the first novel in the Time of Transition series, The Wish List was good, but I wouldn’t call it a strong start.  Yes, we’re introduced to the world and some of its inhabitants, but while it’s easy to read, the plot runs a little slow.  I do plan on getting the second novel when it comes out as I loved a lot of the supporting characters, but I do hope that the second novel will have a different couple at the forefront (there are three fairy godmothers and Kristin is only one).  Plus, I totally want to see Lucas’ next tantrum.
