2009

Here are the challenges I'll be participating in for 2009.

I was originally going to list all of the novels I intend to use for each challenge, but then I started thinking of all the challenges I did this year. The list constantly changed and I keep track of the novels I do read within my TBR. which I plan to continue doing. The more I think about this page, the more I started worrying about having to update a second page.

New Authors

The Details: Hosted by Literary Escapism (Jan 1st - Dec 31st) The idea behind this is quite simple, find a new-to-you author and read one of their novels. I have a huge TBR list of 642 novels and on that list, 155 are new to me authors. So I will have plenty to chose from and since my 2008 list constantly changed, I'll add the authors here as I read them. Don't worry, there'll be 50 new authors, but who they'll be is still up in the air. For anyone looking for new authors, make sure you check out the Author page or my TBR.

Since I'm hosting this challenge, I didn't write an acknowledgment post.

Ending Result: I didn't quite get 50 new authors, but I did come close with 44. Considering the year before I found over 50 new authors, I don't think I did too badly this year. I had some fluctuations in my reading levels, what with Ian being older and wanting to be outside more, but I found a lot of new great authors that I am going to continue reading and can't wait to find some of their older books as well as their new ones coming out this year.

R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril IV Challenge

The Details: Hosted by Stainless Steel Droppings – (Sept 1st – Oct 31st). As you can tell by the dates, this one hasn’t begun yet and won’t for a few months. Stainless Steel Droppings hosts it for the Halloween season and he’s been doing it for the past three years, so I have every hope that there’ll be another one this year. This is my intent to take part once it does. The idea behind this challenge is to read either 1, 2, or 4 (depending on your level of participation) novels from one of the following genres: Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Dark Fantasy, Gothic, Horror, Supernatural – and then post a link to your review at Post links to your reviews the R.I.P. IV Review Site. Here’s my acknowledgment post that gives an idea of what I’ll be reading.

Ending Result: As is always the case, I didn't stick to the original list of novels I was going to read, but I did get some goods ones included. Something I didn't realize was that I finished this one with a couple of weeks to spare, but that just means I get to continue adding to the list. ;) I will admit that one of my books was a children's story that I came across at Barnes & Noble. Seriously, Goodnight Goon by Michael Rex is a great novel and a must have for anyone who reads Goodnight Moon to their kids. In addition to that one, here are the other books I've read.

Support Your Local Library

The Details: Hosted by J. Kaye’s Book Blog (Jan 1st – Dec 31st). Another rather simple challenge. The idea is to borrow books from your local library. What better way to support your local free lending institution? There are three different levels of participation – 12, 25, 50 – and since I’m also doing the 50 New Authors, I have a pretty good idea that I’ll make the third level. Since I’m not entirely sure which books I’ll be getting at the library, I’ll add to the list as I get them. Here’s my acknowledgment post that gives an idea of what I’ll be reading. Ending Result: So I originally thought I was going to be able to participate in this challenge at the third level – 50 books – but that didn't happen. Towards the end of summer, I decided to start trying to clear through my TBR stack, so I haven't made as many trips to the library as I thought I would. However, if I can count Ian's books, my son has been getting at least 2-3 books (if not more) from the library at every visit. So while they are not MY books, I have probably borrowed 50 books from the library over the course of the year.

1st in a Series

The Details: Hosted by J. Kaye’s Book Blog (Jan 1st – Dec 31st). This will be my second year participating in this challenge and I had a blast with it last year. The idea is to read the 1st novel in 12 different series, which went very well with the New Author Challenge. I tried to pick series that had authors that were new to me, since I was looking for new authors, so I found a bunch of really good series. I have a bunch more that I want to try, so finding 12 for this year does not seem like a problem. Here’s my acknowledgment post that gives an idea of what I’ll be reading.

Ending Result: I've completed a challenge! At first I didn't think I would get to finish it, but then once I got rid of the series I was expecting to read and actually inserted the ones I had read, I came up with 12 different series. This actually makes me really happy as I was afraid I wasn't going to finish any challenges this year. On the plus side, all of these series are by new-to-me authors! Here are the books I read:

2nds Challenge

The Details: Hosted by J. Kaye’s Book Blog (Jan 1st – Dec 31st). The idea of this one is to read a novel from an author you’ve only read once. This one is a great one to do along with the 1st in a Series challenge and requires the same number of books – 12. I don’t think I’m going to do the same 12 novels as the 1st in a series list, simple because I tend to read the entire series, or as many as I can, at the same time. Here’s my acknowledgment post that gives an idea of what I’ll be reading.

Ending Result: This was another one that I was surprised I had finished. It seems like I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately, but mainly with authors I already know, so the fact that I did manage to get a second novel in by some new authors was a great shock. And you’ll notice not all of them were mentioned in the 1st Series challenge, so I actually tried more series than I had originally thought. Here are the books I read:

Paranormal 999 Challenge

The Details: Hosted by LibraryThing with a Yahoo Group (Jan 1st – Sept 9th). The idea is to read 9 different books in 9 different paranormal categories, all read in 2009. Sounds easy enough, but reading 81 novels for one challenge in a year is a little intimating for me since this isn’t my only challenge. So I’m going to limit myself to 3 books in the 9 different categories just so I have a chance of completing this challenge and still be able to keep up with the other novels I need to read and review. Here’s my acknowledgment post that gives an idea of what I’ll be reading.

Ending Result: I so totally forgot this one ended in September, which means I didn't get it finished. However, I did manage to read more novels than I originally thought. As previously stated, I wasn't going to do 81 books for one challenge, but I did manage to read 23 out of the 27 I originally agreed to. We were able to chose our own categories, which made it a little easier in finding books, but out of all of mine, there was only one I didn't get to, so I'm pretty impressed with myself. Here are the books I read:
Demons Shapeshifters
Speak of the Devil by Jenna Black Hex in High Heels by Linda Wisdom
Desire Unchained by Larissa Ione The Accidental Werewolf by Dakota Cassidy
Demons Not Included by Cheyenne McCray Branded by Fire by Nalini Singh
Angels Fae
Drawn Into Darkness by Annette McCleave What Happens After Dark (Anthology)
Angels' Blood by Nalini Singh Dreamfever by Karen Marie Moning
Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr
Vampires Magic
Midnight Alley by Rachel Caine Witch Heart by Anya Bast
Friday Night Bites by Chloe Neill Wild Highland Magic by Kendra Leigh Castle
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead On the Edge by Ilona Andrews
Psychic or Clairvoyant Alternate Realms - uncompleted
Curse the Dawn by Karen Chance Rogue by Cheryl Brooks
Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris In Over Her Head by Judi Fennell
Seduce the Darkness by Gena Showalter Salt and Silver by Anna Katherine

Uncompleted Category - Dragons

New Authors

The Details: Hosted by Literary Escapism (Jan 1st – Dec 31st). The idea behind this is quite simple, find a new-to-you author and read one of their novels. When I first started to actively book blog, I didn't know that many authors, so I went on the search for more. Now I am constantly finding new authors and I love finding them. The goal is to read 25 or 50 new authors. That's either 2 a month or 4 a month depending on how fast you read. For anyone looking for new authors, make sure you check out the Author page, my TBR or last's years challenge.
  1. The Thirteenth Step from The Eternal Kiss by Libby Bray
  2. Insatiable by Meg Cabot
  3. Wet Teeth from The Eternal Kiss by Cecil Castellucci
  4. Other Boys from The Eternal Kiss by Cassandra Clare
  5. Shelter Island from The Eternal Kiss by Melissa de la Cruz

  17. The Wish List by Gabi Stevens

Year of the Historical

The Details: Hosted by Lurv a la Mode (Jan 1st – Dec 31st). The idea of this challenge is to get back into reading Historicals. I grew up on those trashy Historical Romance novels and I love them. Lately, I haven't been reading them as much and this is giving me the perfect opportunity to get back into it. Basically, anything counts as long as it's either straight historical (English, French, Ancient History – The Clan of Cave the Bear, etc.) or historical romance (Regency, Georgian, Medieval, American, paranormal historical…). Kmont is not actually putting a set number down for this, but I'm going for at least 12 since that will be one a month. I'm hoping to do more though. Here's my acknowledgement post.

R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril V Challenge

The Details: Hosted by Stainless Steel Droppings – (Sept 1st – Oct 31st). As you can tell by the dates, this one hasn’t begun yet and won’t for a few months. Stainless Steel Droppings hosts it for the Halloween season and he’s been doing it for awhile now, so I have every hope that there’ll be another one this year. This is my intent to take part once it does. The idea behind this challenge is to read either 1, 2, or 4 (depending on your level of participation) novels from one of the following genres: Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Dark Fantasy, Gothic, Horror, Supernatural – and then post a link to your review at the R.I.P. V Review Site.

1st in a Series

The Details: Hosted by Royal Reviews (Jan 1st – Dec 31st). Royal Reviews has taken over the 1st in a Series Challenge and they've changed it up a little. Instead of having a straight number of novels to be read, you can actually choose which level of participation you want to do. For myself, I'm going to stick with what I've done the last two years and do 12 novels, which happens to be the Addicted level. I'm not going to plan them ahead of time since I mainly use the challenges as a guide instead of telling me what to read, but I have no doubt I could end up doing the Obsessed level (which is 20 novels each). Here's my acknowledgement post (although it's kind of buried).
  1. Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep
  2. Hunted By The Others by Jess Haines
  3. Happy Hour of the Damned by Mark Henry
  4. The Stepsister Scheme by Jim C. Hines
  5. Personal Demons by Stacia Kane
  6. Tempest Rising by Nicole Peeler
  7. The Wish List by Gabi Stevens

2nds Challenge

The Details: Hosted by Royal Reviews (Jan 1st – Dec 31st). Royal Reviews has taken over the 1st in a Series Challenge and they've changed it up a little. Here's my acknowledgement post (although it's kind of buried).

Ending Result: It's only July, but I know there's no way I'm going to complete this challenge. I can say I'm going to all I want, but I just don't think it's going to be possible. So I'm ending it now. I did manage to read two novels - Demon Inside by Stacia Kane and No Prince Charming by Shiloh Walker.

Debut Urban Fantasy Challenge

The Details: Hosted by Dark Faerie Tales (Jan 1st – Dec 31st). The idea of this challenge is to try a new series by a new author. The goal is to read 15 novels by debut urban fantasy authors. This is a great challenge to go along with my New Authors Challenge and I can't wait to get started. Coming up with 15 new UF authors shouldn't be that hard, especially with the list Dark Faerie Tales has going. Here's my acknowledgement post.
  1. Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep
  2. Hunted By The Others by Jess Haines

Debut Paranormal Romance Challenge

The Details: Hosted by Dark Faerie Tales (Jan 1st – Dec 31st). The idea of this challenge is to try a new series by a new author. The goal is to read 10 novels by debut paranormal romance authors. This is a great challenge to go along with my New Authors Challenge and I can't wait to get started. Coming up with 15 new UF authors shouldn't be that hard, especially with the list Dark Faerie Tales has going. Here's my acknowledgement post.
  1. The Wish List by Gabi Stevens
  2. Beyond the Night by Joss Ware

The Anita Blake Challenge

The Details: Hosted by Book Chick City (Jan 1st – Dec 31st). The idea of this one is to read all 19 of the Anita Blake novels by Laurell K Hamilton. I've been thinking about re-reading this series for awhile now and this gives me the perfect excuse. I have a tendency to get in the mood for an Anita novel and will randomly pick one up. Now I'll get to do at least one a month. Here’s my acknowledgment post chiming in.

Ending Result: It's only July, but I know there's no way I'm going to complete this challenge. I can say I'm going to all I want, but I just don't think it's going to be possible. So I'm ending it now. Sadly, all I've read is Flirt and that's it.
