Bio: Urban fantasy and paranormal romance author Chloe Neill was born and raised in the South, but now makes her home in the Midwest, just close enough to Cadogan House to keep an eye on the vampires. When not transcribing Merit's adventures, she bakes, watches entirely too much television, roots for her favorite college football team (Go Big Red!), and plays with her dogs, Baxter and Scout.

Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master Vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit, Chicago's newest vampire. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene-and to spy for the vamps while she's at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan's offering some steamy, one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission.
Unfortunately, someone is gunning for Gabriel, and Merit soon finds herself in the line of fire. She'll need all the help she can get to track down the would-be assassin, but everywhere she turns, there are rising tensions between supernaturals-not least between her and a certain green-eyed, centuries-old master vampire.

Jackie: This one is from Nicole: I forgot how many books you have planned for the Chicagoland Vampires series, and that also depends on your publisher etc. Do you have an ideal number of books you'd like write about Merit and her world?
Chloe_Neill: I previously thought about 8 books, but the timeline has shifted, so now I'm not sure.

Chloe_Neill: There are four currently under contract. We'll negotiate for future books in the fall.
Chloe_Neill: I have no plans to stop writing anytime soon.
Dani: Do we have sound effects in here?
Jackie: possibly, but we thought we had turned them off

Dani: Ah, then that's why I have no sound...

Chloe_Neill: @Jackie - I actually asked my editor about using a different name for FIRESPELL, and she thought we should keep it in the family.

HappyTwilighter: @Chloe_Neill do you write with music playing? or in quiet... if you play music... do you have favorite songs/artists for specific characters?
Chloe_Neill: During the week, because I usually write just before bedtime, I write with the TV on (usually Family Guy). On the weekends, when I'm more likely out and about at a coffeehouse, I have music.
Chloe_Neill: I really like Muse. I just downloaded a new song by Civil Twilight that I really love.
Chloe_Neill: It's usually indi/alt music.
HappyTwilighter: do specific characters need certain types of songs, or just whatever you feel like at any given time?

Nicole: I would like to see what actress could pull off the amazing chemistry and snark between Mallory and Merit...they are freaking awesomesauce.
Chloe_Neill: I'd be happy to see it as either. I can definitely imagine the team working together on a weekly basis to solve problems.

nutcase101: I think HEXBOUND would be easier to go to Television, it has a lot more flexibility for a series where Merit would be more movie (also would allow for a lot of special effects)

C Mendoza: Agreed, Nicole. I was happy to see another side to Ethan.
Chloe_Neill: Yes, maabson. I definitely plan to reveal the reason for Gabe's FRIDAY NIGHT BITES and TWICE BITTEN comments. And he calls Merit "Kitten" as a joke...because he considers vamps to be not nearly as powerful as shifters.
Chloe_Neill: (So that will close a long-running discussion...Merit is not a shifter.)

HappyTwilighter: Chloe, do you have a writing group or crit partner that you bounce ideas off of? have you ever drastically changed a part of the story based on their recommendation? or during your own edits?
Chloe_Neill: Nope. No writing group or crit partner, just my editor. And yes--we change lots along the way, usually to refine the mystery plots in the books.
Chloe_Neill: I do now have a continuity editor to make sure blue eyes stay blue from book to book, etc.
Jackie: The next question is from Paulina
HappyTwilighter: have you ever had to remove something based on your editor's suggestion that you really wanted to keep?
Chloe_Neill: I've removed things, but nothing worth crying over. :)
Paulina: One of the areas of power for a vampire is strategy - we know Lacey is very strong in that area. How strong is Merit in comparison?
Nicole: Keeping track of specific small details has GOT to be hard...hence that continuity editor...
Chloe_Neill: Ooooh, good question!
Paulina: hee, yay!
Chloe_Neill: The scale goes: Very weak, weak, average, strong, very strong.
Chloe_Neill: I'd put Merit at somewhere between Average and Strong. She can think strategically, but it's not her foremost consideration.
Jackie: The next question is from deadman
Paulina: She seems to have been getting stronger in this area as the books have progressed
Chloe_Neill: Ethan would sacrifice one vamp to save the House; Merit would save one person even if it sacrifices the House.
Jackie: is it a power she can develop or is that the level she'll stay at?
Chloe_Neill: She's learning from her Master. :)
Chloe_Neill: That's one "power" she'll learn at. But ultimately, it's a personal ethics question.
Paulina: ohhhh, that's a big distinction
Chloe_Neill: Yes, it is.
Nicole: Isn't that what keeps her in touch with her humanity? Not being able to separate the two? Yet Ethan does not want her to lose that either...

Chloe_Neill: Well, it started because I wanted to write about a girl in a band (Can't recall if it was Merit or Mallory) who was bitten by a vamp in the backroom of a club. And that was just silly.

Chloe_Neill: And then I got a mental image of Ethan, and once I figured out who he was, I figured out the main conflict in the CV storyline, and the rest is history!
