Dollhouse, Vampires & a Rant

There wasn’t a lot of activity over the weekend, so I’m going to be including some from this weekend as well.

Mark Henry at the League of Reluctant Adults interviewed Jeri Smith-Ready over the weekend.

There are a couple of articles about Joss Whedon and his new television series, Dollhouse, which also stars Eliza Dushku.

  • New York Magazine – Interview with Joss Whedon and his muse, Eliza Dushku, the star of Dollhouse.
  • Entertainment Weekly – Behind the scenes of Joss Whedon’s new series, Dollhouse, starring Eliza Dushku.
  • Wired – Read about and watch a sneak peek from Joss Whedon’s new series, Dollhouse, starring Eliza Dushku.

Vampire Wire found a couple of new vampire movies that are coming out:

  • Variety – New vamp movie, “Hello, Darkness,” is being made. “Shooting this fall on location in Northern England industrial city Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, and produced and financed by Celluloid Dreams,‘Hello Darkness’ turns on an ordinary man who becomes a vampire and falls for a posh student.” (Variety)
  • Lesbian Vampire Killers:
    • People UK – Comedian James Corden starring in vampire comedy, Lesbian Vampire Killers. “Spending six weeks with my best friend being chased by lesbian vampires – it’s a dream come true.” (People UK)
    • IC Wales – Corden’s co-star Matthew Horne believes the film will succeed despite critical dissing. “I love lesbians, I love vampires and I quite like James Corden.” (IC Wales)

Okay, so now I’m not sure if I should feel insulted or not, but Vox Popoli wrote an article called The 411 on sci-fi/urban fantasy in the publishing world. When I saw this link posted over at Vampire Wire, I thought it was going to be something insightful and interesting to read. Yeah, boy was I wrong. Basically, it’s some snobbish drivel from someone who hasn’t appeared to read any of the novels that’s being criticized. If fact, this is the article:

Snarky, strong, independent women who kick butt and don’t need a man to rescue them… well now, that’s certainly new! You really can’t say that it isn’t fantasy, though, since in the novels, this incredible creature actually has one or more men interested in her in the place of the Feline Familiar and Magic Pulsating Wand that would serve as a much more realistic love interest.

I also made the mistake of reading some of the comments left at this post. Every one of them came off as being judgmental snobs who haven’t even read a novel in the genre, let alone picked up a book. The overall opinion is that the new novels in the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre are nothing but trash and not worth any of their time. Granted, it’s their opinion, but it is kind of insulting to criticize a genre, or new novels in a genre, if you’ve never actually read anything in it. Maybe I just don’t know who this person is, but at the moment, I really don’t respect their opinion unless they can tell me that they actually read a novel from a genre they don’t believe is worth their time.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Sounds a lot like comments made about romance, paranormal and otherwise. Is it the female protagonist or the fact that they are fun reads that garner a huge piece of the book selling pie that causes such animosity? That’s what I can never quite peg…
