TBR List/Pile Check

So I’m curious…what does everyones TBR lists/piles look like right now?  Are you getting it dwindled down or is it out of control?  Is there anything on your list that you’re surprised to see or have forgotten that was there?

For me, my TBR list has 677 novels on it (which also needs to be updated) and I have 40 books sitting on my desk to read.  I am sure there are a ton of novels I have forgotten that are on it, that’s why I have a TBR list.  :)  I’m hoping to get back to it before summer ends.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I’m glad I don’t know an exact number. If I knew I had 677 books waiting for me, I’d go into reading paralysis. As it is, I think mine TBR is slowly getting under control. I’ve been giving myself personal reading challenges to clear out some of the books that have been languishing for years, and tackle anything I buy immediately rather than putting it in my library for later.

  2. I made the mistake of starting an excel spread sheet. Now whenever I come across a novel I want to read, I add it to the list and I’ve been finding way more books I want to read than I’ll ever have time to read. Last year I read about 120 books, so this will take me about 6 years to go through. Of course, that isn’t counting all of the novels I get to review or win through contests (which I can’t help but continuously enter).

  3. Wow! Do you physically own all those books, or is it more of a wish list?

I’m not making too much headway on my pile. It’s been a slow couple of weeks for reading – just busy with other stuff.

  4. I too, keep a spreadsheet. I have to as it is the only way to manage the insanity. However, after I saw that you said you have 677 books on your list, I don’t feel so bad. Unless you want to count the fact I was going to try to read as many books on the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die List, then, I may just be there with you.

However, this is what I have for now:
73 books to be read physically sitting on my shelves.
25 on my wish list that I plan on getting from the library or buying whenever I get the chance.
And of course that list of 1001 books plus the ones that were taken off when it was revised recently.

I am hoping to get through at least 50 books this year. The number is small since I have also comitted to trying to read one short story a week.

I would have said I was making headway, but I attended a library sale this weekend and bought 21 books, 16 of which are ones I’ve never read before. Thus, I have a feeling this will be a one step forward, two steps back kind of year.

But its okay as far as I’m concerned. There are a lot worse addictions and problems I could have other than one related to having this strange need to keep my shelves always stocked to the gills with books I want to read.

    Good luck with your list!

  5. I use Goodreads to keep an evidence of my TBR pile/shelf, and so far I am close to 150. It is definitely spiraling out of control and driving me to despair (I add way more than I get to read) because it is clear I won’t get to read them all in this lifetime (unless I stop adding, of course, but there are so many temptations around).

I am very impressed about your 677 pile (though I will probably reach that number too in a few more months, not a happy thought let me tell you), in a “wow if she does not despair then how can I” kind of way :)

  6. O_O I think if I had your Mt. TBR I would faint… Mine’s currently a little below 170 (not counting rereads), so very manageable compared to yours. Still, I’ve put a ban on (most) book buying for a year to keep it from getting over the 200. I do also have a “Want this” list, which is basically a TBR list for books I don’t yet own. I’m more likely to add and chuck things off of that and use it more as a memory jog whenever I need to buy course books/presents and decide to add ‘just that one book just for me’ or friends’ presents. That brings the total up to around 400, I think. But some of those books I may never buy, so the actual total may end up far lower.

Your list certainly puts mine in perspective, though!

  7. I have my list on an Excel spreadsheet too. And it is ever growing – between blog reads and message boards – I can’t make a dent in it – LOL. I think I have about 350 books on it now – but I haven’t updated it in a while – with the list I keep by the laptop to write books down. No, I don’t own all these books, but they are definitely books I want to read. I try to keep tabs on who recommends them so I can give credit where credit is due when I blog about them – but that isn’t going so well.

I am hoping to read 100 books this year (I am in a book challenge to do just that). But all this doesn’t include those impulse buys and impulse books I get from the library.

  8. I started listing Mt. Bookpile (aka my TBR list) on GoodReads… last year I took 180 books off, but added 120! This year, I’ve read 35 books, but added 65 so I’m already at a 30 book deficit. One of these days, when I’m rich and don’t need to work for a living, I’ll plow through all of them but until then I’m resigned to having no control over any of it!

  9. I totally have to make an excel spreadsheet for my TBR list now! I just hand counted and there are 738 on my list, and I have 9 ARCs at home, 19 incoming from BM/PBS, 7 library books, 14 incoming contest wins, and finally 30 books in my stack at home. So only 817 total :) I guess it could be worse lol

  10. My TBR list is out of control but I am not sure on an actual number. I have a notebook that sits by the computer where I write down books that I want to read and unfortunately I haven’t numbered it. I am planning on switching it over to an Excel worksheet but haven’t found the time yet :)
