Guest Author: Dani Harper

DHarper- Changeling DawnI am excited to welcome author Dani Harper today. Dani is getting ready to release her third Changeling novel, Changeling Dawn, on December 27th.

RUN
Shadow and moonlight merge beneath her bare feet, the forest floor blurring as she flees the dogs and torches. Werewolf, monster — those are the names given her kind by the humans who hate them.

HUNT
Kenzie Macleod has spent her whole life hiding what she is, and she’s not about to open up to any man, even one as powerfully attractive as wildlife expert Josh Talarkoteen. But legend says that a Changeling cannot escape the call of her true mate, even in the wilderness of backcountry Alaska.

MATE
An isolated archeological site, a terrified Changeling cub, a secretive research center — as Kenzie and Josh face the ultimate betrayal, his obsidian eyes promise untold pleasure and hint at dark secrets of his own . . .

Make sure you stick around to the end. We’ll be giving away a copy of Changeling Moon, Changeling Dream or Changeling Dawn – winners choice.

Shapeshifter 101

In my new paranormal series from Kensington-Brava, I’ve created a world in which the werewolves live as humans among us, hiding in plain sight. They call themselves Changelings and they regard their innate ability to become a wolf at will as a gift. This shapeshifting power can also complicate their lives, however, particularly when love is involved.

There are 3 immutable laws in the Changeling world:

  1. Never harm a human.
  2. Never turn a human against their will.
  3. Changelings mate for life. Always.

If you met up with a wolf in the forest, would you know if it was a Werewolf or a Changeling? The difference could mean being eaten – or not! Need help in a hurry? Looks and attitude will tell you all you need to know!

LOOKS – They say never judge a book by its cover, but that doesn’t apply to shapeshifters. From movies and TV series to sightings of the Beast of Bray Road, most werewolves are just not attractive critters. They have powerful bodies, but the proportions leave a lot to be desired, making them more ape-like than wolf-like. Werewolves usually walk upright too, and tails are short or missing altogether.

DHarper- Changeling DreamChangelings in their lupine form are attractive. Graceful and swift, they stand on all fours like natural wolves, with all the symmetrical features that we’ve come to admire on Animal Planet and Nat Geo. Aha, you say, how do you know if it’s a Changeling or a real wolf? Easy. Changelings are much bigger. And while the fur color seldom corresponds to the color of their human hair, their eyes are always the same. Just look close….

ATTITUDE – Throughout history and Hollywood, the werewolf is a bonafide monster, an out-of-control killing machine. Snarling, growling, roaring, drooling, tearing apart buildings and people with equal enthusiasm, the werewolf makes a terrible party guest. And he doesn’t listen well – reasoning will not work.

A Changeling doesn’t listen well either but it’s because he’s already left, intent on guarding his secret identity. Unless you’ve been foolish enough to endanger him, his pack or (worst of all) his mate. Yes, Changelings have rules they choose to abide by, but that doesn’t mean they’re tame!
So you see, it isn’t all that difficult to tell a werewolf from a Changeling in their animal form. But what about when they’re human?

Traditionally, werewolves don’t masquerade well as humans. Folklore describes definite physical signs you can look for. A unibrow, for instance. Having an index finger that’s longer than the middle finger. Eyes that glow in the dark. And werewolves are tense. They pace, they stress. After all, they can’t remember who they ate the night before. Plus they’re impatient and prone to fits of rage – all of which gets worse as the full moon approaches.

Changelings? They may run on four feet in their free time but they choose to live as humans. They have jobs, pay bills, drive cars … they could be your neighbor, your boss, your banker. The only thing that’s certain is that you will never, ever know. But don’t worry. Thanks to the rules, they never harm humans unless they turn rogue. And that’s only happened once.

So far.

Contest Time!

Thank you Dani for taking the time to stop by Literary Escapism!

Contest Time! Dani is giving away a copy of Changeling Moon, Changeling Dream or Changeling Dawn – winners choice. To enter, all you have to do is answer this one question: Werewolves have become as popular as vampires in pop culture, and are featured in ever-increasing numbers in books, TV shows and movies. But there are many more things that go bump in the night … If you couldn’t read stories with vamps and weres, what OTHER paranormal beings would you choose to read about? Remember, you must answer the question in order to be entered.

Even though I’m not giving the additional entries any more, you can still help support the author by sharing their article, and this contest, on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, or anywhere you can. After all, the more people who are aware of this fabulous author ensures we get more fabulous stories.

The winner must post a review of the novel someplace. Whether it is on their own blog, Amazon, GoodReads, LibraryThing or wherever, it doesn’t matter. Just help get the word out.

The contest will stay open until November 29th at which time I’ll determine the winner with help from the snazzy new plug-in I have.

I have not been contacting winners, so you will need to check back to see if you’ve won.

  1. I like books featuring Gargoyles but there aren’t a lot of them.

If I win I’d need the first book in the series.

  2. Just a quick note — Because each book stands alone, it doesn’t really matter if you read Changeling Moon or Changeling Dream first. I’ve heard from readers who have done it both ways and they concur. (Fun fact –Changeling Dream was actually written first!)

  3. I like books with all kind of paranormal beings…. demons, fey, angels, djinn, mermaids, dragons, all king of shifters.. wolfs, tigers, lions..

  4. oh man I would want book 1! thanks for the awesome contest!

I LOVE shifters of all sorts (cats and dragons among the favs).. but otherwise I go to fae, witches.. psychics are a another big fav.. angels are a new one thats gotten pretty popular as well..ohh and steampunk!! theyre getting big.

  5. Thanks for a great post and giveaway! I have the first two books and I’m waiting for this long holiday weekend to dive in.

I’d have to say, I like any book that deals with unique paranormal creatures/ideas. I don’t care if it’s a gargoyle-wereturtle as long as the story telling is decent and the author can make me believe it’s possible.

  6. Even though I would probably DIE without my werewolves there is something to be had for those yummy tattooed demons!

    Thanks for the awesome contest!

  7. I’m on a big angels or demons kick right now so I’m going to go with that. If I win I would love to have Changeling Moon. I have read the other two in the series, they are awesome!

  8. Welllllll if it’s just wereWOLVES that are out, then it’d be other shifter predators (I just lurve me some big cats)..

But if all shape shifters are out, then it’s Zombies, Gargoyles, and/or Aliens (oh my!)

(and yes, I’ve read some with zombie heroes or heroines that were fantastic believe it or not)

    Thanks for the giveaway!

    Jess

  9. Hey Dani! If I couldn’t have my shifters or vamps I would be all over the Fae. Well, I am all over them regardless, but even more so ;)

Don’t worry about entering me, I just wanted to stop by and give some love :)

  10. Hi Dani, Thanks for the invite. Thanks for the wonderful post and I always love a giveaway! Haven’t been able to get any new books since our house was flooded in June.

I love all things paranormal. I am a huge fan of Rebecca York, Dana Marie Bell, Annette Blair, Shelly Laurenston/G.A. Aiken, Rhyannon Byrd, Christine Feehan and of course..You. As well as many more.

If I am lucky enough to win…I would want your up coming new release..Changling Dawn. I have the first two books (ebooks).

Thank you for your wonderful imagination and talent.

  11. Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us today, as well as for the opportunity to win one of these awesome books. I just finished Changeling Dream this morning and I tell you this is a series you do not want to miss and I cannot wait to read the other installments. I look forward to reading a story about gargoyles. I read one a while back that was part of a trilogy and then another book where the gargoyle was a secondary character. They seem to have lots of potential :)

  12. That is a good question considering I am a huge fan of vampires and weres so what else would I like to read about maybe Harpies, Witches, and I actually have enjoyed zombies as of late.

  13. I love shifters of all sorts. They are my favorites, but aside from them, I love books where the lead characters have some kind of elemental power – like power over fire, or water, or if they can control the weather or something. Of course I also love witches, the Fae, various mythological creatures….I’m not picky LOL.

  14. Angels & Demons always make for great reading. The ultimate battle of good & evil.

I will say necromancers. Though icky. There powers seem amazing!

  16. Well I’m all for the good VS evil, or dark VS light, however you wanna hear it- but I especially like it when Dark and light are on the same side…Fallen angels, demons, I’m all about balance, and working together for the great good. If It’s only werewolves that are out, then I’d also like to add Dragons, I particular love Deborah Cooke’s Dragon Fire series.
