There are so many great series out there that it’s quite easy to get left behind when new books are released. You don’t even want to know how many series I am so far behind on, but I will admit to one – JR Ward’s the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The tenth novel, Lover Reborn, will be releasing on March 27, 2012 and I’ve been thinking I really need to get caught up.
However, I have a slight problem. I first read Dark Lover when it came out in 2005 and I am only on the sixth book, Lover Enshrined. It turns out that Angela from Dark Faerie Tales is only on the fifth book, Lover Unbound, and she’s been wanting to get caught up as well. Since it has been so long since either of us have read the Dark Lover, we’ve decided to read them together and we would love it if you joined in with us.
Have you read the series yet? Do you want to read it again? Have you been looking for the chance to start this much-talked about series? Here’s your chance. The Dark Faerie Tales & Literary Escapism Black Dagger Brotherhood Read-a-long will begin on January 6th with a discussion about Dark Lover and end on March 30th with Lover Reborn. We’ll be dissecting the series, talking about our favorite points, things that didn’t work and possibly giving away a copy of the novel as well. We’ll be reading all 10 books in 3 months and we would love to have you join us. Here’s the full schedule.

If you haven’t read the series yet, then you should definitely check them out. Here, I’ll help:
In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.
The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.
Within the brotherhood, Rhage is the vampire with the strongest appetite. He’s the best fighter, the quickest to act on his impulses, and the most voracious lover-for inside him burns a ferocious curse cast by the Scribe Virgin.
Possessed by this dark side, Rhage fears the times when his inner dragon is unleashed, making him a danger to everyone around him. When Mary Luce is unwittingly thrown into the vampire world, she must rely on Rhage’s protection. Knowing that Mary feels the same intense animal attraction, Rhage must make her his alone…
Even within the vampire brotherhood, Zsadist is feared. Still bearing the scars from a tortured past, he is renowned for his unquenchable fury. Anger is his only companion, and terror is his only passion-until he rescues a beautiful female from the evil Lessening Society.
Butch O’Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex-homicide cop, he’s the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world-to engage in the turf war with the lessers. His heart belongs to a female vampire, Marissa, an aristocratic beauty who’s way out of his league. And if he can’t have her, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers.
But fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he’s found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back, though even her love may not be enough to save him.
The ruthless and brilliant brother Vishous possesses a destructive curse and a frightening ability to see the future. As a member of the Brotherhood, he has no interest in love or emotion, only the battle with the Lessening Society. But when a mortal injury puts him in the care of a human surgeon, Dr. Jane Whitcomb compels him to reveal his inner pain and taste true pleasure for the first time-until a destiny he didn’t choose takes him into a future that does not include her…
As Primale of the Chosen, the fiercely loyal Phury has sacrificed himself for the good of his race. But his first mate, the Chosen Cormia, wants not only his body but his heart for herself. As tragedy looms over the Brotherhood’s mansion, Phury must decide between duty and love.
Now, as the vampire warriors defend their race against their slayers, one male’s loyalty to the Brotherhood will be tested – and his dangerous mixed blood revealed.
Rehvenge has always kept his distance from the Brotherhood – even though his sister is married to a member, for he harbors a deadly secret that could make him a huge liability in their war against the lessers. As plots within and outside of the Brotherhood threaten to reveal the truth about Rehvenge, he turns to the only source of light in his darkening world, Ehlena, a vampire untouched by the corruption that has its hold on him – and the only thing standing between him and eternal destruction.
In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other – vampire warriors, defenders of their race…John Matthew has been through his vampire transition and taken to the life of the Brotherhood with a vengeance, but he still can’t shake the nightmare of his past and is unsure of his future as a warrior hero. He’s made a promise to honour the Brotherhood and their fight with the slayers at all costs, until the love of his life is kidnapped and he is forced to make a choice that could change his life and the Brotherhood’s forever…
Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, seductive cloth as her brother. Imprisoned for eons by their mother, the Scribe Virgin, she finally frees herself-only to face a devastating injury. Manuel Manello, M.D., is drafted by the Brotherhood to save her as only he can-but when the human surgeon and the vampire warrior meet, their two worlds collide in the face of their undeniable passion. With so much working against them, can love prove stronger than the birthright and the biology that separates them?
Tohrment, the Brother who had it all, but lost everything to the enemy, is destined for a second chance at love and life. But will the past and his bitterness hold him back?
And we can’t forget about the short story: Father Mine, which is about Zsadist and Bell.
And for those with ereaders, you can purchase Novels 1-4 and Novels 5-8 as a bundle.
I recently finished LOVER REVEALED. I wouldn’t mind doing this challenge, but I am terrible at keeping up with this stuff. Are you going to have any kinds of reminders or anything, or just posts that go up to discuss the books as you finish them?

Yay LOVE me some BDB!!!
I just finished Dark Lover and definitely want to read the rest of the series. I’m game!
ha HAH!! this is what you were talking about.
I’m in. Of course.
However, I reserve the right to skip Lover Enshrined. Once was enough.
Yeah, I agree with Nicola… my heroes need to have a little less angst than Phury and that was before I read ‘Enshrined’. Now if JR would just let Blay and Qhuinn hurry up and have their own HEA I’d be a happy camper!
I just read the whole series in 2011, so I won’t be joining the read-a-long, but I just wanted to reiterate how FANTASTIC this series is!! Can’t wait for Lover Reborn in March!!
I want to get back into reading this series. I love it. I might start adding them to my TBR monthly book piles and I will sure be joining along…
