Black Friday: Dianne Duvall

Black FridayBlack Friday is here and we’re discussing the season with Dianne Duvall’s Darnell and Sheldon from Night Reigns.

Ami isn’t much for trusting strangers. She has a hard time trusting anyone. But she’s no coward, and she’s no pushover in the protection department either. So when she comes across a mysterious warrior taking on eight deranged vampires on his own, she doesn’t hesitate to save his bacon. Of course, that was before she realized what one little rescue would get her into . . .

Marcus Grayden has been an immortal protector of humanity for eight hundred years, and at the moment he’s not interested in backup. From the moment Ami arrives in his life, he can’t deny that she’s strong, smart, and extremely skilled at watching his back. But she’s also destroying his protective solitude and stirring desires he can’t bear to awaken. After all, whatever her secrets — how can she defeat death itself?

Get to Know the Immortal Guardians Crew 4

DDuvall-Night ReignsThank you, Jackie, for welcoming me to Literal Escapism for your big Black Friday event! I’ve been doing some character interviews on my blog tour to celebrate the release of Night Reigns, the second book in my Immortal Guardians series, on December 6th and thought it would be fun to continue here with a Black Friday theme.

In case you’re new to the Immortal Guardians, I’ll just take a quick moment to explain that the vampires and immortals in my series are both infected with a rare symbiotic virus that produces the increased speed, strength, and regenerative properties both possess, as well as the photosensitivity and a need for blood. Vampires are humans who have been infected and suffer brain damage as a result that causes them to rapidly descend into madness. Immortals are gifted ones, men and women born with advanced DNA, who have been infected. Their advanced DNA protects them from the madness.

Now, the Immortal Guardians crew isn’t only comprised of immortals. Seconds, mortals who guard and assist individual immortals, play a large role, too, as readers will see in Night Reigns, when immortal Marcus is assigned a new Second — Ami — who turns his world upside down. Today Sheldon, Richart’s Second, has agreed to interview fellow Second Darnell, a close friend of Ami’s. :-)

Sheldon: Hey, man. How’s it going?

Darnell: *sighs* Don’t ask.

Sheldon: Is something up? We could do the interview another day.

Darnell: No, today’s fine. Have you by any chance seen Marcus?

Sheldon: No.

Darnell: What about Richart?

Sheldon: He’s . . . hunting.

Darnell: Lisette or Étienne?

Sheldon: Not tonight. Not so far. Why? What’s going on?

Darnell: I’m trying to find an immortal I can con into doing my Christmas shopping for me.

Sheldon: *stares at him, then bursts into laughter* Seriously?

Darnell: Absolutely. They have super strength and super speed. Those guys can get in and get out of a store in no time at all and crowds would prove no obstacle. I, on the other hand, could shop twenty-four hours a day from now until Christmas and still not get a present for everyone on my list. I’m starting late because of all of the vampire troubles that have arisen and don’t know how I’m going to get it all done.

Sheldon: I could help you out. Richart has been spending a lot of time . . . elsewhere. So I have some free time on my hands. I still have a couple of my own I need to get anyway.

Darnell: *relief blankets his features* That would be great. Thanks. *reaches down and picks up a binder — about an inch thick — that is propped against his chair and drops it in Sheldon’s lap* I really appreciate it.

Sheldon: What’s this?

Darnell: My gift list. Well, most of it.

Sheldon: *eyes the binder with dread* You’re kidding, right?

Darnell: No. I’m David’s Second. He’s the second eldest and most powerful immortal on the planet. When Seth is needed in two places at once, David takes up the slack. Where David goes, I go. And he goes all over the world. So I pretty much know every Immortal Guardian currently living, as well as their Seconds. Hence, my gift list.

Sheldon: Dude.

Darnell: Now I just need to think of something good to give Seth and David. I hate shopping for those two. They’re thousands of years old. What do you give men who have seen and done everything?

Sheldon: You don’t really expect me to–

Darnell: I need to find something special for Ami, too. Living with Marcus is probably driving her up the wall.

Sheldon: Speaking of . . . I heard you weren’t too thrilled about her becoming Marcus’s Second.

Darnell: I was furious, actually.

Sheldon: Why?

Darnell: Marcus loved Bethany for eight hundred years. His behavior has grown increasingly erratic since her death. I’m afraid he’ll get Ami killed.

Sheldon: I’mmmmm pretty sure Seth and David wouldn’t let that happen.

Darnell: Seth and David have been insanely busy lately. Contrary to popular belief, they can’t be everywhere at once.

Sheldon: You may be worrying over nothing anyway. The guys at The Network think Marcus is going to pull a Roland and scare Ami off.

Darnell: *laughs* I’d like to see him try. Ami is a lot tougher than she looks. *cell phone buzzes* Hang on a sec. *retrieves phone from a back pocket* Yeah? . . . Wait. What? . . . Marcus and Ami did? . . . What? . . . No. David isn’t here . . . No. I’m on my way. *ends call and tucks away his phone* Gotta book.

Sheldon: Wait!

Darnell: *adjusts the weapons strapped to him and points to the binder* Thanks for helping me out with that, man. I owe you. *leaves*

Sheldon: But I . . . *looks down at the binder* Crud. *thinks a moment, then takes out a cell and dials* Richart? Yeah, me. You feel like doing some shopping? *frowns* No, I’m not high.

As you can see, fitting in your holiday shopping while hunting maddened vampires and burgeoning enemies can be difficult. :-) If you’d like to see more of the Immortal Guardians crew and learn what happens when Marcus and Ami are thrown together, I hope you’ll check out Night Reigns!

And don’t miss my big Kindle Contest. I’m giving away TWO Kindles (or a Kindle Gift Card if you already have one) to celebrate the release of Night Reigns. See my website for details.

Thank you for joining us! Have a wonderful week!

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
