I just finished the third novel in Gerry Bartlett’s Glory St. Clair series, Real Vampires Get Lucky, and it was just as great as the first two novels.
When a female loan shark named Lucky is attacked and left for dead, vampire Glory St. Clair turns her into one of the undead to save her––but eternity would have been safer without her.
Vamps prefer a low profile, and that’s not Lucky’s style. She prefers to flaunt her sexy rock-star ex-boyfriend and great shoes.
I have to say, I was looking for something fun and light and Bartlett definitely delivered. I liked that there wasn’t any major issues that had to be dealt with this time around, but instead we got to learn a little more about Glory, the lifestyle she has chosen to live in and that she is pretty good about herself. Her character was developed a little more and it worked really well with the storyline. We also learned a little more about Rapheal (aka Valdez) and I’m kind of hoping that we’ll be around when Glory gets to meet the human version.
The plot itself was, again, really fun and not at all the dark and twisty that I was trying to avoid. In fact, we’re given more chances to laugh at the hijinks that ultimately occur around Glory. I do have to say that I wasn’t totally impressed with the character Lucky, but there were a lot of mixed signals with her. She was bat-sh!t crazy, but that kind of went against what she kept being described as. Lucky was/is suppose to be a 50ish loan shark goon who only appears to be early forties due to some great plastic surgery, but she really didn’t come across as being an older lady, but more of an aging teenager. It might just be me, but Lucky was a very contradictory character, but that probably did add to the craizness that is her.
Overall, I’m loving this series and Real Vampires Get Lucky really helped me get back into the reading frame of mind. Now I just need to get my hands on a copy of Real Vampires Don’t Diet, since it’s probably going to address a situation that came up in Real Vampires Get Lucky that should prove interesting to Blade’s and Glory’s relationship.
