Exclusive Excerpt: Midnight Frost by Jennifer Estep (Contest)

JEstep-Midnight Frost

Midnight Frost JEstep-Midnight FrostI am excited to welcome author Jennifer Estep, who is sharing an exclusive excerpt from her newly released Mythos Academy novel, Midnight Frost.

Just when it seems life at Mythos Academy can’t get any more dangerous, the Reapers of Chaos manage to prove me wrong. It was just a typical night at the Library of Antiquities-until a Reaper tried to poison me. The good news is I’m still alive and kicking. The bad news is the Reaper poisoned someone else instead. As Nike’s Champion, everyone expects me to lead the charge against the Reapers, even though I’m still hurting over what happened with Spartan warrior Logan Quinn. I’ve got to get my hands on the antidote fast-otherwise, an innocent person will die. But the only known cure is hidden in some creepy ruins – and the Reapers are sure to be waiting for me there…

Make sure you stick around to the end. We’ll be giving away 5 copies of Midnight Frost.

Excerpt: Midnight Frost

I walked down the main aisle, but instead of going behind the checkout counter, logging on to the computer system, and getting to work, I veered off to my right, where a freestanding coffee cart was shoved in between some study tables and the stacks behind them. I got in line and breathed in, enjoying the rich, dark aroma of the hot espresso mixed with the softer scents of chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon that flavored the air.

Maybe it was the cold outside, but I wasn’t the only one who wanted a drink or a snack, and several kids were ahead of me in line. As I stood there, I was aware of eyes on me. Except this time, it wasn’t the statues who were watching me—it was my fellow students.

I knew what they saw when they looked at me—a girl with violet-colored eyes and frizzy, wavy brown hair who was wearing not-so-designer jeans, sneakers, and a gray T-shirt and sweater under her purple plaid jacket. Nothing really out of the ordinary or impressive, but the students started talking all the same.

“Look. There’s Gwen Frost.”

“Is that a real Fenrir wolf she has with her? It’s so cute!”

“I wonder what she’s up to now?”

“The Gypsy girl? Probably trying to figure out how to stop the Reapers. They say she’s Nike’s Champion . . .”

Those whispers and more swirled around me like the bits of snow had outside. I grimaced, but there was nothing I could do but pretend I didn’t hear everyone talking about me or the chimes on their phones as they texted their friends about the latest Gwen Frost sighting. Daphne had told me that someone had even come up with an app so everyone could track me around campus with their phones. As if I didn’t have enough problems already without everyone knowing exactly where I was all the freaking time.

Oh yeah, everyone seemed to be watching every move I made, and it had only gotten worse since the Reaper attack at the winter band concert. Now, all the kids at Mythos knew that I was Nike’s Champion—and that I was supposed to save us all.

They didn’t know the details, though. That all I had to do was find some mysterious magical artifact that would supposedly let me kill Loki, who was pretty much all-powerful and evil incarnate.

No pressure or anything.

Contest Time!

Thank you Jennifer for taking the time to stop by Literary Escapism!

Jennifer is giving away 5 copies of Midnight Frost. To enter, all you have to do is answer this one question: An app to locate Gwen Frost? Would you download it so you could know where she is – why or why not? Remember, you must answer the question in order to be entered. (US/Canada)

Even though I’m not giving the additional entries any more, you can still help support the author by sharing their article, and this contest, on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, or anywhere you can. After all, the more people who are aware of this fabulous author ensures we get more fabulous stories.

The winner must post a review of the novel someplace. Whether it is on their own blog, Amazon, GoodReads, LibraryThing or wherever, it doesn’t matter. Just help get the word out.

The contest will stay open until August 31st at which time I’ll determine the winner with help from this snazzy plug-in that I have.

  1. No, I wouldn’t download the app. I try to keep my phone really simple. But… it sounds like a cute app!

  2. I would love to have the app! True, it is an invasion of privacy and stalker-like, but Gwen is destined to save us all from Loki so why not.

  3. I have read so many of these books, I love Jennifer Estep’s writing style on both the adult and upper YA level. Thank you for the treat of a giveaway opportunity. No I would not use such an app, primarily because while I can be a fangirl about books and authors, I just think that would be creepy. Guess I have not quite gone around the bend yet LOL

  4. While I love my phone, tablet, etc. I would not download the app. I think it’s a little stalker to follow someone around via gps. Wouldn’t want to invade anyone’s privacy that way.

Thanks for the great info on a new series for me. This site makes me want to sit somewhere sunny, with a cold ice tea and read all day. Can that be a job? Because I would be so up for that. Thanks again!

  5. No I would not like an App to locate Gwen Frost because it seems weird to have an aspect of a book in an App and I don’t like to clutter my phone.

  6. While the concept of the app is intriguing, I wouldn’t download it because I wouldn’t use it. I love the series though!

  7. I have a dumb phone, so I wouldn’t be able to download anything, but, if I could, I would download it. Trouble seems to follow Gwen, so I might want to make sure I’m heading in the opposite direction.
