Dark Harvest by L. Hilburn

I just finished Dark Harvest by Lynda Hilburn and it’s taken me a little longer to go through than normal because I read it as an e-book. After reading this novel, I’ve come to a conclusion…I’m not a fan of e-books. Kind of off topic I know, but it took me longer to read it and I didn’t get as much enjoyment out of reading on my laptop as I usually do with a paper book. There’s definitely a difference in mood when reading on an electronic device compared to turning the pages of a book. For now, I think I’ll still with paper books and leave the kindle verisons to everyone else.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand…as the follow-up novel to The Vampire Shrink, Hilburn continues to develop her characters and throws another life altering situation at them. This time around, we’re introduced to Hallow who is a vampire slayer of some repute. He’s so good even Devereux is really concerned about his presence. Things get even more dicey when it becomes obvious that Kismet is the object of his desire. Again, Kismet has attracted the attention of a dangerous psychotic vampire and she still has no reason why.

I do have to say, that I really enjoyed this novel and if I had a paper copy, I would probably have flown through it within a day. After the great piece of work of The Vampire Shrink, Hilburn doesn’t let us down with Dark Harvest. The story moves along at a pace that keeps the reader interested without giving away too much of the plot. Although, there was the addition of one character that I really wasn’t fond of. While there was nothing wrong with her character, it was kind of obvious that she had ulterior motives where Kismet was concerned and the what happens to her character at the end really didn’t come as a surprised. Well, what happens to her did come as a surprise, but not why she entered Kismet’s life to begin with. I do have the say, that a certain problem of Kismet does get handled by the end of the novel and I’m not sure how I feel about the resolution. I think I’ll miss the problem, but it’ll be interesting to see what happens next.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Dark Harvest and I can’t wait to hear when the third novel will be out. Again we’re given a great story with some interesting characters who continue to entrance us. I, fo one, will definitely be buying this when it comes out in a couple of weeks. So if you haven’t gotten your hands on the first novel yet, then you really need to.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Dear Jackie: Thank you so much for reading and reviewing Dark Harvest! I’m so happy you enjoyed it. (I especially thank you for reading the e-version I sent you for review — you’re the best.) I’ll definitely keep you posted about the third book’s progress. I’ll have a short story in the upcoming Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance. I’m not sure if I’ll submit the story I wrote that takes place in Kismet’s world, or another story. I’m excited about the anthology, either way!
    Hugs, Lynda

  2. I’m going to have to throw myself into the “has great difficulty getting through e-books” ring too! :) Even if I print them out, I still have a heck of a time getting through it. It’s just not the same as a book. I certainly can’t drag it everywhere like I do with books, lol.

On the topic of the review, great review Jackie! I haven’t had a chance to read either of Lynda Hilborn’s books, but I’ve heard nothing but good reviews on them. :)

  3. I feel the same way about e-books. I have tried ant tried them but they just don’t pull me in the way an actual book does. I’ll be on the lookout for first book in this series. After reading the excerpt I’m interested.

  4. where can i purchase copy of dark harvest in ebook format? RE: “I just finished Dark Harvest by Lynda Hilburn and it’s taken me a little longer to go through than normal because I read it as an e-book. ”

  5. I’m not sure if it’s made it to e-book yet. Dark Harvest just came out this past week (unless it’s one of those that was marked as Oct. 1 and really isn’t due out until the7th), so you might have to give it a couple of weeks before it’s available in e-format.
