Escapist Newsletter (Vol 3 Issue 9)

I love starting out my posts with artwork and who better for this one than something from the very talented Dan Dos Santos.  Check out the hotness he created for Patricia Brigg’s fifth Mercy Thompson novel, Silver Borne.  I know it has a tramp stamp on it, but click on the image – its gorgeous.  I am digging the detail and this has got to be one of my favorite ones at the moment.  Silver Borne will be available March 30, 2010, which is not soon enough.

As always, SciFiGuy has more great titles being released this month and he usually has a lot more straight fantasy than I do as well.  Definitely worth a look through.

New Excerpts:

The Novel World is hosting the next Bookworms Carnival and she’s looking for reviews of Banned Books. The deadline for submitting a review link is September 11th.

The Book Blogger Appreciation Week will be coming up in a couple of weeks and there are a lot of events planned for it. I happen to know that a lot of our favorite authors have donated books as giveaways, so you definitely want to bookmark that site and keep checking it between September 14th – 19th.  Also during that week, I’ll be having daily giveaways for some great novels.  If you were around last year, I gave away five novels that began some great series and this year I’m upping the prizes a little.  Like I did last year, I’ll post which books I’ll be giving away, but I won’t say which day their contest will go live.  You’ll have to check in every day if there’s a certain book you want.  As a teaser, I can tell you one of them will be a signed copy of Blood Promise by Richelle Mead, courtsey of last night’s appearance in Birmingham.

In related news, LE made the long list for the BBAW Awards, but judging is currently going on so we’ll have to wait and see if I made the short list.

Are you a fan of Meljean Brook’s Guardian series?  Then you should check out The Guardian Timeline she created with a bunch of pretty pictures.  Speaking of Meljean, there is a new group author blog that has popped up. Ilona Andrews, Jill Myles, Meljean Brook, Nalini Singh and Patrice Michelle have joined together to give us The Oddshots.  Speaking of new sites, Love Vampires has a new site design and I’m digging it.

Ann Aguirre has exciting news. She’s sold two more novels in her new Ava Gray paranormal romance series that starts with Skin Game.  Ann had already sold book two, Skin Tight, but we will now have books three and four – Skin Privilege and Skin Dive.  While we’re on the subject of Ann, the latest Sirantha Jax novel comes out on September 29th and I can’t wait.  Until then, if you’re looking for new Jax reads, then you should check out these two free reads Ann has posted at her website: Renegade, which is in March’s POV and Exile’s Lament, which is in Vel’s POV.

For fans of SL Viehl, you’ll be happy to know that the Genreality blog has reported that she has sold two more dark fantasy/paranormal romance novels.

Thanks to the SciFiGuy’s Weekend Report, I found out that Jennifer Rardin has said that the seventh Jaz Parks novel will be called Bitten in Two.  Jennifer has also put together a Midwestern Book Tour to celebrate the release of Bite Marks and has a few stops so far.  She may be adding more, so keep a lookout on her blog.

Nalini Singh has posted a deleted scene from Branded by Fire.  I can see why it is a deleted scene, but if you have girlfriends, you’re so going to find this hilarious.  ;)

Book Promo: So I totally found this book over on Orbit’s blog and its cover caught my eye.  The book is Christopher Moore’s You Suck and it’s actually a YA novel.  Unfortunately, the cover on amazon isn’t the same (and I personally like this one better), but check out the story

In this rambunctious tale, Tommy, a naïve and eternally lusty 19-year old from Incontinence, Indiana, is rather peeved to find out that his hot vampire girlfriend Jody has turned him into a bloodsucking fiend too.

If he admits it, there are some pretty cool things about being a vampire – like eternal youth, super-strength and enhanced senses, and hey – even his zits have cleared up! It’s just the fact of being dead which is a bit of a bummer, along with the fact that anything except blood makes him projectile vomit, and that he passes out every day at sunrise, making trips to the mall rather difficult.

So Tommy and his girlfriend set out to find a minion to run errands for them and generally be their slave-around-the-house. And who better than the angsty goth teenager they meet at the local drugstore? Meanwhile, Tommy and Jody have other more important things to worry about, like fleeing from Tommy’s former turkey-bowling pals who have turned on him, and the fact that the centuries-old vampire who bit Jody in the first place has decided he wants her back.

Some sad news for Tate Hallaway fans.  She has turned in the fifth Garney Lacey novel, Honeymoon of the Dead, which will be out next year; but her editor has turned down the proposal for future Garnet novels. So we will be saying goodbye to Garnet and all of her friends when Honeymoon of the Dead comes out next May.

New Titles:

  • PC Cast has announced the title for the seventh House of Night novel, which will be Burned.  No mention of a release date though.
  • Caitlin Kittredge is working on a new YA novel tentatively titled The Witch’s Alphabet.  She’s on the second round of edits and she’s giving us a little more information on the series.
  • Melissa Marr has the official release date for Radiant Shadows, which will be April 20, 2010.  Melissa says she has the cover for Radiant Shadows, but there are still a few tweaks left to iron out.  So we should be seeing something shiny sooner rather than later.
  • I’ve come across a new site, Anna’s Book Blog, that has some news I’m unfamiliar with.  According to Anna, the tenth Sookie Stackhouse novel is Dead in the Family.  I’ve been browsing through Charlaine’s site and I haven’t seen any mention of this yet.  Her bibliography only mentions through nine, so if anyone has the reference, I would love to see it.
  • Meljean Brook unveiled the title for the tenth Guardian book – Demon Blood.
  • CE Murphy has tentatively titled her sixth Walkers Papers novel as Rattlesnake Dances.  Since she is still in the proposal stages, there isn’t word on when it’ll be release and by then we may have a new title.  But she’s working on it.
  • Chloe Neill has also revealed the titles for the next two Chicagoland Vampire novels – Twice Bitten and Hard BittenTwice Bitten will be released July 2010 and Hard Bitten will be out later in the fall of 2010.
  • Maria Snyder announced in her newsletter that the title to the third Glass novel will be Spy Glass, which will be out sometime Fall 2010.
  • Kelley Armstrong announced the titles for Women of the Otherworld #11 and #12!!  These two books are going to be focused on Savannah and will be titled Waking the Witch and SpellboundWaking the Witch will be released sometime in August 2010 and I’m sure we’ll have at least 6 months before we’ll get Spellbound.  Tez Says found a blurb for Waking the Witch, so head over to check it out.
  • Diana Pharaoh Francis has announced the title to the fourth Crosspointe novel.  The Hollow Crown will be released in June 2010.

Judi Fennell, the author of a great new Merpeople series, has just accepted her second contract for a new series about genies.  The first novel, I Dream of Genies, will be available next fall.  It’s still early, so the titles and release dates may (and probably will) change before then, but we’ll be having some genie action soon.

Diana Gabaldon is having a launch party for Echo in the Bone – yes that’s out this month!  I can’t wait.  Yes, everything will be put on hold until I read it.  Well, starting the 22nd at least.  Back to the launch party. It’s going to be at the classic Arizona Biltmore Hotel around 6ish on September 22nd.  The only think you really need to plan ahead of time is getting your book.  In order to have your copy of Echo in the Bone signed, you have to buy it from Poisoned Pen since they are the ones hosting this shindig.

How did I miss the release of the cover for Eileen Wilk’s Blood Magic?? Check it out.  I think this is the first cover that shows Lily’s face in such detail. I’m digging it.  If you haven’t noticed, Eileen’s site hasn’t changed much lately, but you can still get a ton of great news on Eileen’s facebook pageBlood Magic will be released February 5, 2010. Here’s the blurb:

As they plan their wedding, Lily Yu and lupus prince Rule Turner are facing a great deal of tension from both their families. Not everyone can accept their mixed marriage: she’s Chinese; he’s a werewolf. Even Lily’s grandmother is acting strangely distant, though Lily and Rule are about to discover that her behavior has nothing to do with their upcoming nuptials.

A powerful, undying nemesis has come to San Diego to exact vengeance on Lily’s family–and turn the city into a feeding ground. It’s up to Lily and Rule to stop her, in spite of ancient treaties and an inheritance passed down through the blood. Otherwise San Diego could go up in flames and they won’t live to make it to the altar…

Have you been to the new Ilona Andrews website?  They did a complete redesign which includes a bunch of bonus features for both the Kate and Edge worlds.

Well, I wouldn’t say it’s a complete redesign, but JR Ward has updated her website a little.  There is now two separate sections when you go to http://www.jrward.com/ – one for the brotherhood and one for the fallen angels.  Still no hints to the next BDB or Fallen Angels novels.

Have we heard that the third Dark Swan novel by Richelle Mead is going to be called Ironed Crowned?  For some reason, that sounds new to me, but I could be wrong.  Also, the fifth Georgina Kincaid novel will be Succubus Shadows.

This Month’s Reviews:

Lilith Saintcrow announced that she’s working on a Jill Kismet short story, tentatively titled Holding The Line, for an upcoming anthology edited by Justin Gustainis.  Once I figure out the title of the anthology, I’ll let you know.

Marjorie Liu announced that she’s participating in a new anthology that will be released in 2010 and edited by Lou Anders.  At the moment, it’s called With Great Power, but we all know how titles change.  Either way, the anthology will be a collection of “Superhero Prose Tales” published by Pocket books.  For more information and a list of contributing authors, check out the post on Lou Ander’s blog.

Dakota Cassidy is currently working on a new novel called Suck It UP, Princess, which will be out sometime in the Fall of 2010.

At the beginning of the month I was in Ann Arbor for Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Bad Moon Rising Tour and I came across quite a few tidbits during the Q&A.  I won’t post everything again, but if you missed the post and want to know what came up, click here.

Speaking of tours, I went to Richelle Mead’s Blood Promise tour stop here in the Detroit area, but I really have nothing to report.  Richelle did a Q&A, but nothing really new came out of it.  Most of the questions centered around random trivia than anything interesting about the books.  The only thing I could report on is that Rose’s story from the Vampire Academy series will end at 6 books, but Richelle has been contracted for 6 more YA novels and she’s thinking she’s going to do a spinoff of the VA series using characters we already know.  She also said the Georgina Kincaid series will end at 6 books as well.

Fangoria spotlighted a new anthology that will be appearing in stores this month.  Hellbound Hearts won’t be your typical UF/PNR anthology since its celebrating the Hellraiser creator Clive Barker.  However, the contributing author list has two that I am familiar with – Neil Gaiman, and Kelley Armstrong.  The other authors listed are: Steve Niles, Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, Mick Garris, Richard Christian Matheson, Sarah Langan, Mark Morris, Nancy Kilpatrick, Peter Atkins, Tim Lebbon, Nancy Holder, Yvonne Navarro and Nicholas Vince.  Pocket Books will be releasing Hellbound Hearts on September 29, 2009.

Shiloh Walker is looking for our help.  Her local library has had a major catastrophe and they are looking for books.  The library’s book collection was completely devastated and they need our help to beef it back up.  If you’re interested in helping, check out Shiloh’s website for more information.

The Vertigo Theater in Flint, MI is having their The 2nd Annual Vampire Ball to benefit the Flint Farmers’ Market on October 24, 2009.  Last year they had various vampire novelists in attendance to sign novels and whatnot, so if you’re interested, check the The Vertigo Theater’s site for more info.

If you haven’t already heard the news, Melissa Marr, Kelley Armstrong and Allyson Noel are putting together a kickass YA book tour for next year (in the fall I believe).  There is also a list of about 7 other novels (Jeri Smith-Ready and Rachel Vincent to name 2) that will be appearing at various stops as well.  They are still in the process of planning this gig, but you can keep up to date on it at their Facebook page.  Also, they are looking for suggestions as to stops for the tour.  I’m all about a Detroit tour or somewhere relatively close.

Tez Says is reporting that the next Anita Blake novel by Laurell K Hamilton is going to be titled Flirt.  Tez is usually pretty good about finding tibits out, but I’m not sure about this one.  Flirt just seems so different from the rest of the series titles.  I still haven’t seen it listed on LKH’s site yet, so this could all change later on, but for now, we get to look forward to Flirt.  Tez does say it’s to be released February 2, 2010.

Marta Acosta announced over at Vamprie Wire that the fourth Casa Dracula novel will be released October 2010.  She hasn’t said what the title is, but we’ll get more Milagro soon.

Maria Snyder is coming to the Detroit area!! I’m so excited.  She’ll be appearing for a couple events at the Monroe Public Library, so I have two chances to see her.  On November 7th, she’ll be presenting Storms and Magic: Controlling the Forces of…Fiction? at the Dorsch Memorial Library from 1pm to 4pm.  Then on November 8th, she’ll be participating in the MPL’s Writers on the River at the Ellis Reference and Information Center from 11am to 3pm.  Both events include an author signing of course.  I’m not sure which one I’m going to because the Writers on the River event will actually have 30 authors from Michigan and the Ohio ara, so I’m curious to see who is going to be there.

There’s going to be some new additions to the Dark-Hunter family.  Sherrilyn Kenyon has announced their will now be action figures for all of the Dark-Hunters.  The company putting it together, Ashton-Drake, is looking for some help though.  They want input from the fans as to what the figures should look like!  Kenyon is asking fans to fill out this survey and by doing so you’ll also be entered into a contest.  Sweetness!

The Horror Yearbook has all five Volturi pictures from New MoonThe Horror Yearbook also has insider information from Chris Weitz & Stephenie Meyer, plus a look at the Volturi set.

Wright, which releases December 1, 2009.  Kmont also has a selection of covers that she showcased awhile back.   SciFiGuy has more cover art to show off.  The first one is for Sarah McCarty’s Caleb, which releases October 2009.  The second one is for an anthology called Winter Moon that features Mercedes Lackey, CE Murphy and Tanith Lee. Winter Moon releases October 1, 2009. SciFiGuy has the cover and blurb for Howling Legion by Marcus Pelegtrimas.  This is the second Skinners novel and will be released October 27, 2009. There is also a new cover for Adrian Phoenix’s Beneath the Skin (December 29, 2009), which you can see above.

And finally, Half Past Dead – a duology featuring Bianca D’Arc and Zoe Archer.

Interviews:

Check out what I spotted over at Authors After DarkHalf Past Dead is an anthology containing two stories – a military paranormal called Simon Says by Bianca D’Arc and an historical paranormal by Zoe Archer.  Both of these authors are new to me, but I’m liking this cover so I may have to use this as my foray into their worlds. Half Past Dead has a December 29, 2009 release date.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. So many exciting news in this post, but what exactly is a tramp stamp? I don’t really see anything objectionable, other than that some prudes might object to a woman showing some skin. Probably the same people who drool over all the naked male torsos on book covers >_>
It’s a beautiful cover, but anyway, I’ve never heard of a “tramp stamp” before.

  2. Two things:

Flirt by LKH is a novella like Micah, taking place in the Anitaverse. There will be a full length Anita later that year.

Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris was revealed at several talks she has given in recent months. I heard about it at a writer’s workshop talk she gave in Gainesville, FL. I haven’t seen anything on Amazon or anywhere but she just signed a contract for books 11, 12, and 13 in the Sookie Stackhouse series.

    Hope this helps!

  3. Maggie – the “tramp stamp”, as so many call it, is the obligatory tattoo on the back. There has been a lot of covers that have this feature lately that a lot of people are calling them tramp stamps. They don’t bother me either.

Leslee – that’s the most news I’ve heard on both of those books. Thanks! I had a feeling that the Harris news was done during talks and it honestly doesn’t surprise me that she signed for 3 more books. The show is doing awesome (although I still need to watch last night’s episode). So we’re getting two Anita books next year? Awesome.

  4. If I haven’t mentioned it before, I love your site. You have the most interesting news! I have CM’s You Suck and I like the cover I have better. Great, great, great post!

  5. This is the best issue of your newsletter yet. Wow what a tremendous amount of excellent info. Charlaine has blogged about the new book on her blog under Books and News as of Sept 1. The Christopher Moore book cover you show is a reprint and it is gorgeous. The book is a sequel to Bloodsucking Fiends and isn’t really YA. And I humbly thank you for the gadzillion links.

  6. Glad I could help. I love talking about books and your site is one I go to every day. It is the best, love the set up and everything. I have been tempted to start a blog but with your site, I don’t know that I would have anything new to add to the blogosphere. I think I will just stick to writing reviews for Night Owl Romance. :)

  7. Wow, what an incredibly comprehensive collection of uf/pnr news!

Thanks for the heads up on the Eileen Wilks cover. I love that we finally get to see Lily.

Now, I’m off to visit all of the links I opened in new windows!

  8. I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
