UF/PNR/SF/F Reviewers Wanted!

Do you enjoy the Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Science Fiction, Steampunk and/or Fantasy genres? Have you thought about reviewing? If so, Literary Escapism is looking to add three reviewers who are passionate about sharing all the fabulous stories they read. I am not looking for someone who is looking to expand into the UF/PNR/SF/F genres; this person must already be a fan of the genre(s). These new reviewers will be expected to submit one review a week.

New reviewers will be held to the same standards as the current LE team:

  1. Have an interest in Urban FantasyParanormal RomanceFantasy (High, Epic, Dragons, etc), Steampunk and/or Science Fiction (including, but not completely focused on, SF Romance) and will be willing to review most anything that gets requested. I’m not saying you’ll like everything, but I get a lot of new authors in these genres requesting reviews and they are the ones I really hate turning down.
  2. Be willing to read and review four books a month at a minimum, agreeing to submit one review per week (on a specific day) and be willing to read books on a deadline.
  3. Literary Escapism has gone digital for review copies, so an e-reader is a must. I am accepting ARCS that are sent 45 days in advance, so you must also be willing to give me your address, that way if I do receive any, they can magically appear on your doorstep. This is one bonus to being a reviewer. One caveat, you must be a US resident to receive any print novels. The positions are open to international reviewers as long as you realized you’ll only receive digital copies.
  4. Understand that being an LE reviewer means…
    • free books are not a guarantee and are only available when I have them or requests are sent. However, reviews can be written for anything you read and your commitment to reviewing four books a month is not contingent upon receiving free novels.
    • there is no compensation for this position other than being able to keep whatever books that you review.
    • successfully complete a 60-day probationary period which will involve reading and reviewing your own books or ebooks prior to receiving any from LE.
    • reviews will be written in a professional manner.
    • being open to constructive feedback from both readers and myself.
    • any review posted on LE cannot be submitted to another review site; however, a snippet may be added to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, GoodReads, LibraryThing, etc (and is encouraged) with an ending tag line indicating the full review can be seen at LE.
  5. Upon agreeing to being a reviewer, I expect you to read and review all novels acquired through Literary Escapism, regardless if you like them or not, and in a timely manner – even if that means a review indicating you did not finish the book as long as you state why. Any review is better than no review from a readers perspective as long as you’re honest (and tactful).
  6. Be willing to try something new. I can not guarantee that I’m receiving the latest and greatest in any genre, therefore I’m looking for someone who is willing to try something new, even if it’s not immediately appealing. Edelweiss and NetGalley offer a wide range of titles and I’m looking for reviewers who are willing to take a gamble.
  7. All potential reviewers must disclose any relationships to the publishing industry. If you work for an author, publicist, publisher, etc, that’s fine; but that does determine which books you would be able to review. I.e. If you’re an author’s assistant, you will not be able to review that author’s work.
  8. All potential reviewers can not currently review for another literary fiction (book) review site or maintain their own review site. I’m not looking to compete for reviews.
  9. All reviewers are expected to help promote Literary Escapism and it’s content on social media sites.

Hopefully, none of this sounds unreasonable, but I’ll be honest, Literary Escapism is my baby and I treat it like the full time job it is. Nothing gets published without me going through it once and I’ve been known to ask for more before posting it (even my husband has been subjected to this). One thing I would like to stress is all reviews have to be based on one’s honest opinion. That is one of the many aspects that I take great pride in and I will not jeopardize that at all.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I am interested in being one of the reviewers for uf/pnr/etc, but I am not sure what the parameters are for your reviews. Whenever I do reviews for goodreads or amazon, I tend to make them short and general because I don’t want to give too much away.
    Suggestions?

    • On sites like Goodreads and Amazon, short reviews are good because people are looking for a quick review. And while I don’t have a required word count, there are certain things I look for in a review. I figure, if someone has come to LE looking to see our thoughts on a particular book, then we should give it to them. If you can do it, and make it short, fabulous; but if you want to put a bunch of words down, I’m not going to stop you either.

Honestly, just apply. Being able to write short reviews isn’t a bad ability. If you can hook the reader, that’s what really matters.
