#BlackFriday: Memories of Christmas by Alyssa Richards

Black Friday is here and we’re discussing the season with Alyssa Richards’s Addison Montgomery from Somewhere in Time.

Addison Montgomery has finally found love with the man of her dreams, Blake Greenwood, and is ready to live another lifetime of happiness with him. But the morning they’re supposed to bring closure to their dark, violent past, all chances of a happily-ever-after turn as dead as the ghosts she sees on a daily basis.

Now Addie must team up with her greatest enemy, embracing her not-quite-perfect gift of reading art psychically. If she succeeds, she will finally learn the truth behind her father’s and grandfather’s disappearances. If she fails, every chance at love she’s ever hoped for will be destroyed. But one thing is clear: she has to choose between saving Blake or her family, and there’s no way she can ever have both.

Memories of Christmas

ARichards-Somewhere in TimeAddie checked her watch. It would be another hour before their plane was ready. Jingle bells, Christmas music and distant ho ho ho’s filled the space around her. Everyone rushed to fill Santa’s sleigh. Addie just wanted one thing — a gift to give Blake.

It would be their first Christmas together. With all that had gone on in their lives though, there had not been time for shopping. She hoped to find something meaningful, but in the crowd of a busy shopping center, she didn’t hold out much hope.

She scanned the shelves, too many images rolled by in a blur. A youngish woman hurried with two young girls, one of them pushed into her as they passed. “Sorry!” the mother called to her. “Abigail, you just ran into that woman. Slow down.”

“It’s okay,” Addie waved them off and smiled. She decided to walk a loop around the back of the store. If she didn’t see anything for Blake she’d leave.

The colored lights came into her view first. She sighed. Memories of Christmas always traveled heavy on her heart. This tree in particular reminded her of the tree her family used to have in Savannah. Always colored lights, not the tiny white sparkling ones that were so en vogue. Oh, how she loved the warmth of color.

She approached the tree with all the wonder of a child. So many ornaments, each one unique with its own story to tell. When she saw it she knew she’d found her gift. A tiny pocket watch ornament, swinging gently from a branch. It was a near replica of the one that Blake carried – the one that held their history inside of it

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. It is an amazing thing to find just the right gift for someone. Love that the heroine spied something that the hero could use to decorate for future Christmases, as well as, it being something evocative of their shared history.
