Passionate Thirst by Cameron Dean

I hate lengthy flashbacks in novels. There always seems to be a flashback whenever I least want it. That can definitely be said for Passionate Thirst by Cameron Dean. When I’m reading a novel, I don’t need a whole chapter on how the love interest couple met, especially if the book is playing on their stormy breakup. Just tell me the sordid details in a page or two and I’m set. Distracting from the main plot of the novel with something that doesn’t need to be there is the one element that can make me put the book down for something else.

I’m not crazy when a story will jump between two times either. It’s almost as if Dean wanted to do a story about how Candace and Ash initially met, but wasn’t able to do so. Now she’s intermingling it with his reappearance in her life. I get completely turned off a novel when this happens. If an author wants to recant an earlier experience, do it in the first couple chapters and then move forward in time; but to do it sporadically can create a disjointed plot. In my opinion, it can be hard to keep on the right plot line if you have to worry about which time period you’re in.

I have to say, after finishing this novel, I’m not impressed. The flashbacks annoyed me so much that I actually wrote the first two paragraphs while I was reading. I was only interested in one of the two plot lines and found the second one to be more annoying than entertaining. I understand that this is the first novel of a series, and that the characters needed to be developed, but I thought it could have been done a lot better. Overall, I’m not feeling like I need to go out and get the next book, Luscious Craving. I’ll give the book a chance before I completely write off the series off, but I’m not expecting too much.
